Dear all,

I know it is not the right comparision. No two cities can really be compared, each has its own flavour & charm. And if Toronto has to be compared, it might better be with Vancouver or Montreal.

But that has been dealt many times over. Now, I need some sincere advice/s from you seniors, without bashing me up. If after enough deliberations, it finally trickles down to a choise between these 2 cities -Toronto or Calgary, which would be better for a new settler?

Presumptions: The settler has No Job Constraints & would be Self-Employed.
Comparision includes: Housing costs, Weather, Education, Socio-Cultural equality/containment, Family life etc.

An overall subjective assessment is also welcome.

Regards.

bash bash bash bash

The only thing i know is that Calgary is cold. As for higher education, University of Calgary is pretty good but Toronto is better. Then again, you can live in Alberta and then your kids to study in University of Toronto when they reach the age.

Family life - what does family life mean to you?

Ontario and Alberta, Ontario has better institutes than Alberta
for example
U Toronto top ranked in Business, Social Science, Medicine, 100% better ranked then U Calgary and U Albert in all aspects
University of Western Ontario- highly ranked in Business, Social science, 90% better then U Calgary and Alberta in all aspects
U Waterloo, Engineering, psychology, law, Finance world wide highly ranked 80% better then U Calgary and 65% then U Alberta in aspects
U York - Business, social science and Arts courses better then both Alberta and Calgary.
McMaster better than Calgary but on same level as Alberta
U Toronto and U York are in Toronto, U Waterloo in waterloo 1.5 hours from Toronto, UWO London 1.5 hours from Toronto, McMaster in Hamilton 2 hours from Toronto.
So if you think about childes education then Toronto is better (BC has some good school, UBC best in Canada and Simon Fraser highly reputed). other things you have to look around e.g. Job Market etc but I prefer Ontario.
Living cost index by statistics Canada put both cities on average at same level.
Both cities are very multicultural,

I bet Calgary is better than Toronto for new immigrants unless they are sure to find high professional job in Toronto. Even Edmonton/Regina are far better than Calgary, if you have do survival/off jobs in the beginning. I know it through my experience and observation.

I don't doubt any university in Canada....

Kali - are they all good though? I mean the universities? I know the G13 universities in Canada are pretty good. Maybe those ones are good mostly from a research point of view.

Zulkfal - is there are ranking in Canada for engineering and for business schools, both undergrad and graduate studies.

Above comments are my observations as I have no plans to live here for longer just grab PhD and max 1 year experience and flight back to home sweet home, therefore I look university reputation which can give me good reputation around the globe, university reputation counts.

yes Macleans for undergrad, with program wise and solely currently best for undergraduate.
for postgraduate I normally look Time higher education ranking which gives ranking for top 500 global universities, solely and program wire. For Business FT MBA school and finance ranking. These are my sources for rankings.

wow faculty, what is your major.

if don't mind which uni you went for your PhD, McGill is good in over all reputation a reputed better then 80% of other Canadian universities. Waterloo is best in Engineering in Canada.

@ Rupeshhari: I say generally most of university are in the same rank except few exception such as newly born university from community college. For sure some university are expert in some field while other in other field,in average brings university same rank....that's my point.

Consider that there are few universities in Canada within same ranking compare to USA and UK with wide range of ranking.

@ Zulkfal: For PHD and 1 yr experience, you don't have to worry about RP, just apply university......you will get you destiny sooner...Just my acknowledgment

I am not expert but these are my prospective.......

Kali - thanks for the info.

Zulkfal - why not study in the US?

@ Kali am a first year PhD student in Canada at U Waterloo,
@ rupeshhari :US don't like from child hood don't know why, when I was 8 years old I went with my uncle and dad and they still tell me that I didn't liked that place that time. Plus my plans are different I don't want to join academia after PhD and wanted to go to Middle or Pakistan after PhD and I thought if I can PR mean time then may be after a year or two after PhD will have my passport and will go back as during my one year experience with a top firm I had to give up lots of projects just due to visa issues. Therefore Canada
