Hi folks,

We will be landing in Canada in a few weeks. Our intended province of Residence is Alberta so, we are planning to complete our immigration landing process in Calgary. However, the most convenient flight we can get will take us though Pearson Intl Airport in Toronto. We will have a few hours of airport layover after which we take a connecting flight to Calgary. Seeing as Toronto will be our first point of 'landing' (albeit via airport transit), will this affect out intention to complete the landing process in Calgary? Does this mean we will have to complete the immigration landing process in Toronto?

Your guidance will be highly appreciated.

The first city in Canada you touch down in will be the city you land in (regardless of your final destination). If you're landing first in Toronto and then flying on to Calgary - it's best to have four hours between the two flights to make sure you have sufficient time to deal with the landing procedures and then catch your flight to Calgary.

Thanks scylla. Our transit time is so tight 1:45min. Looks like our best bet is to get a flight heading directly to Calgary.

Many thanks.

Are you sure we need to complete immigration formalities at the first Canadian city of touch down? As far as i understand, can't we ignore going thru Immigration when we are just transiting from an International terminal to a domestic terminal for an onward journey? I suppose Immigration should come only when we try to leave the airport.

Please correct me if i am wrong.

I also have a similar itinerary, I want to complete landing at Toronto but have a connecting flight in Montreal with a stop over of 1hr 50 mins and i have already got my tickets :(

First of all you cannot make it in 1.5 hrs... the immigration process itself takes more time..Why are you choosing a complicated process....Its very smooth process of immigration in calgary...come straight

It indeed is confusing... i didn't think of this at the time of booking the tickets. Even if we need to do this at the first POE into Canada, i don't think it will have any impact on our plans to reside in a different city as stated by qorax in this post: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/doubts-can-i-land-anywhere-matter-which-poe-to-choose-t35499.0.html

However, since you are yet to book tickets.. i would advice you to choose an itinerary that gives enough time to complete these formalities at the first POE.

For my own booking, i would wait for some more advice if i need to make changes to it.

Do we have to pass through immigration officer and border service when we make a transfer from international flight to local flight in Canada, at Toronto airport?

Yep...
After you have completed your formalities regarding COPR Completion etc. there would be another dude sitting with a desk and a chair, who asked us about our Province of Landing, as it was Ontario so he said that is all he wants to know. MAY be you tell him if otherwise... Not sure though.

As for the Transit, I did not encounter any thing like that when we were exiting from Pearson Airport. So better not risk being late for your flight to next city, ample time for transferring is always good.

Regards

I am going to Calgary on working holiday visa. Flight ticket from Amsterdam was cheaper with transfer in Toronto. Do I have to wait for my luggage in Toronto or it will be automaticaly transfered to plain for Calgary? I have 150 minutes between flights.
