The BOWP will be valid for 12 months.

BOWP is issued for 1 year or to the passport expire date (if it shorter than 1 year). Don't forget to renew your passport if it's going to expire soon (not relevant if you already submitted your application).

Exactly, the work permit will be mailed to you and does not require you leaving the country to activate it.
However, if you need a TRV, then you can apply for it when you receive the BOWP.

Check the current processing times and add a couple of days for shipping. That should give you an idea.

I applied for mine on May 10th (which was a Saturday, by the way...) and got the positive answer on May 21. So, 11 calendar days. Hard copy received on May 26th.
