Hello everyone,
I've read a good bit on this site but this is my first time posting. I'm dating a Canadian going to school in London, Ontario. I live in Detroit, MI, USA so we are pretty close in distance. We have been together for over a year and want to live together eventually. When she finishes school next year (April/May 2016) we want to move together to Winnipeg. Due to the distance between Detroit and Winnipeg we want to get the immigration ball rolling now so we don't have to be apart for months while waiting on the whole process.
With that said, it seems that family sponsorship applications take different amounts of time to process depending on how busy they are. We are thinking about getting married soon to begin the process this summer in hopes that everything will be approved by next Spring. I already know that Outland is the way to go for us.
So I was wondering about landing - does Canada set your landing date or do you? When moving to Canada I will be living with my partner's parents to start as we establish ourselves in Winnipeg. So while I like her parents I would much rather move at the same time as her. If everything gets approved before she finishes school can we delay landing? Or could I land and then come back to the US for a little bit and actually move to Winnipeg at a later date?
From what I read it seems like both might be possible. I'm just wondering if everything gets approved and I can land next January, can I just wait 4 months to actually land or does that look bad?
From what I've read, the whole process seems to take some time so I feel we should start sooner than later, but I don't want to get too far ahead and not be ready to move to Canada when the time comes.
Thanks for your time
