As another alternative way of checking progress of application - applicants can apply for GCMS notes. See: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/atip/pia/global-phase2.asp
Applying for GCMS notes is now done via an application under the Access to Information Act or Privacy Act. More information here- forms are at the right of the webpage: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/atip/index.asp
You can browse through the FAQs here - http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/atip/faq.asp
Note that this is particularly of advantage to PR applicants who are in Canada already (under a WP, LIC, etc.) - there are no fees if you apply for GCMS under the
Privacy Act. Takes 1 month though to get results back. There are some abbreviations, but generally you can see the flow of your application process - takes some effort though to read through.
As I understand it, now if you have a relative, a trusted friend in Canada, provided he/she is a Citizen/PR, they can obtain information on your application in your behalf. Fill in
Form IMM5475E - Authority to Release Personal Information to a Designated Individual- this provides them your consent.
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM5475E.pdf
Note at the bottom of the form and in the webpage:
If you have not yet submitted your application: Send this form along with your application to the office listed in your respective application kit
If you have already submitted your application: Send this form to the office where you submitted your original application
Your designated representative can then file an application for GCMS notes on your application under the
Access to Information Act - unfortunately there are fees for this. ($5 for the application..)
For me personally - beats waiting for replies to emails to the VO... ;D ;D
/hope this helps....
