Hi, I have heard that time that one spend in Canada while on work permit (while working) counts towards the total time period required for Citizenship eligibility. i.e. if some one spend two years on work permit (while working) and later get the PR through CEC, then he / she only needs 1 year to complete 3 years period requires to file Canadian citizenship, is that TRUE?

Yes, each day you spent legally in Canada before becoming a PR counts as half a day towards the total number of days for your Citizenship application eligibility. Here's the calculator you might need and some instructions/explanations: https://eservicesak.cic.gc.ca/rescalc/resCalcStartNew.do?&lang=en.

Thanks for the quick response..

On the same note, If some one has spend 2 years on work permit, but person was away from country for 3 months (due to work related travel and was still getting his salary paid in Canada), does that 3 months period away from Canada counts towards duration required for citizenship or only time physically spend in Canada counts for citizenship?

Only time physically spent in Canada (and legally) counts. The 3 months you were away must be declared and shall be subtracted from the calculation. The calculator asks you for time away.

No - this isn't quite correct. You can count the time spent in Canada before you became a PR. However you only receive 1/2 day credit for every day spent in Canada (i.e. if you spent two years in Canada before becoming a PR this only counts as 1 year for citizenship purposes). In addition, two out of the three years required to qualify for citizenship must be accumulated after you become a PR. And no - any time spend outside of Canada (no matter what the reason) cannot be counted towards citizenship.

Is this valid until today? I have been in Canada on work permit since 2012, and got my PR in June, will the time I spent on work permit be counted?

Guys,

Something is wrong with all above comments.
Have a look at below two links to know CHANGED Citizenship rules.

Time spent as a non-PR won't be considered towards citizenship anymore, not even half.

And one has to be present in Canada for 4 out of last 6 years with each year's presence atleast 183 days.
