Hey everyone,

I applied to sponsor my wife who is currently residing in Pakistan on September 3. Sponsorship was approved on October 1 but we have not received the AOR from Islamabad yet, nor is the status available online.

@MissIffy - I see you were asked for an RCMP certificate as you were an international student in Canada. My wife was too, and I am worried they will ask the same of us. I am considering getting the process started already as I have heard it takes 3-4 months. However, I just checked the RCMP website and it says the processing time is only 2-3 weeks. I was wondering if you (or anyone else that has been required to submit an RCMP certificate from abroad) could shed some light on this.

From reading a few other posts, some people did guess that they would be asked to provide the RCMP certificate and so applied for it BEFORE they knew they had too. The only drawback to doing that is that if your visa office is SUPER slow, you may get the RCMP certificate too early and it "expires". However if you are expecting communication from your visa office soon, then go for it. I really wish I had known I would be asked for this, and then I would also have done it earlier. Most people on this forum seem to have received the certificate within a month, but their websites says 120days max, for more complicated cases.

Thanks for the reply. A month isn't too bad I guess. I'm kicking myself for not doing something about this earlier, as the more I think about it the more I am convinced they will ask for it. However, since I don't even have my AOR yet this might be a good time to initiate the process. I wonder if they will continue to process your application but only issue the visa once they receive the clearance, or actually stop processing until they receive it.

It doesn't really matter to me as I don't want to land till September 2011 and I think it'll be finished by then (as long as they don't say no!)

I would suggest to anyone applying in the future to submit their app. one year ahead of their desired landing date. Having all this extra time has really helped keep my stress levels down when they've asked for all these extra things!

I'm in a similar situation in that my wife wasn't planning on coming here till around November 2011. However, my visa office is so slow (and seems to be getting slower) that even applying 13 months in advance of our planned landing date seems like it was too optimistic a decision.

Landed on January 3, 2011 and PR process is now complete. PR card will be mailed in 6-8 weeks. Now for SIN and OHIP. Thanks to all who provided guidance...this forum has been great..

Congrats!!! :)

We are still waiting, last word from Buffalo was that that do not need anymore information from the applicant, and it is still in process.

How long to get a sin number and OHIP?

I think the SIN number is immediately given, the card comes in a week or so. OHIP card is sent after 3 months or so, since it is effective from then only.

You can apply for a SIN number as soon as you land. You need a SIN number to legally work in Canada so this is important to obtain straight away. But I'm afraid you have to wait three months until you are eligible for OHIP. I was out of the country for 4.5 years (and I'm a Canadian Citizen) and when I returned obviously my OHIP expired and they made me wait for three months so I had to take out travel insurance to cover me for that period. However, you can apply for OHIP anytime before the three months and they will send it to you a few days before it kicks in. Definitely worth staying on top of it so you don't have any gaps between when your travel insurance runs out and when you are eligible for OHIP.
