Hi There,
I imagine it's been already posted in here but I cannot find it unfortunately.
I am in the process of gathering documents in order to sponsor my common law partner into Canada. We'll be going through the Sydney office and I was wondering if you could possibly tell me how much extra money should we be prepared to spend in order to finalise the entire application process.

I know that the baseline application fee is $1040.

However I have no clue how much the meds could possibly cost (my partner is totally OK health-wise), FedEx etc. Our entire documentation is in both English and French so we don't need to translate anything.

Could you possibly tell me how much this whole thing has costed in your case? How many other misc costs have you incurred and what the total amount was?

I greatly appreciate your help!

Cheers,

I think each case is different in terms of how much is spent on an application:

For me on top of the $1040

Medicals cost $250 ish
6 photos $ 45
Getting stat decs notarized $100
Getting my birth certificate translated cost about $160
I went to a lawyer just for consultation $150
Postage cost $30
and then all the printing and photos that needed to be printed for proof of relationship $10-15

It all adds up when you do it not to mention all the gas you have to spend running around trying to get to places to do everything.

Good luck with you application!

I actually kept track of all my visa-related expenses. I had to send away to the US for a copy of my birth certificate and an FBI police check. Just in the past year or so they started charging at police stations to get your fingerprints done (for the FBI check) so that was an expense too. It all added up! The total in AUD (converting from USD and CAD) was $1,843.14.

There's only one place in Melbourne that does the medical exam, so $498 it was.

ItemFee
Sponsorship Application$75.00
Principal Application$475.00
Permanent Resident fee$490.00
Medical Exam$498.00
Police Check - Australian Federal$42.19
License Check - Victoria state$8.70
Fingerprints - Victoria state$43.70
Police Check - FBI$18.00
Birth Certificate (copy fee)$80.00
Birth Certificate (fax to request)$3.50
Public transport to take fingerprints$9.00
Visa Photos$18.00
Express courier international$60.15
Total$1,761.09

Thanks a lot guys, that's been very useful and certainly very helpful. Now at least I know how much money will this whole thing cost us.

Secondly, could you possibly tell me if there's a immigration lawyer/consultant here in Melbourne who's specialized in immigration to Canada. I guess that I'll be able to take care of the whole thing myself however I'd like to know if there's anybody around "just in case"

Cheers,
I hope you have luck searching for an iigration lawyer that has knowledge of Canadian affairs in Australia. This forum is good if you are getting advice from people who's application was processed extremely quickly I've found. If you can't find one, remember there will be immigration lawyers in Canada that will help you over the phone for consultation, it may set you back a few hundred but could e worth while especially if you are having great difficulty or feeling that your app isn't straightforward?
They will help you, if only to ease your concerns and stresses of getting it done right leaving no room for errors

Hi There,
That sounds like a fair idea, I'll try to google someone in Canada who's able to help me over the phone/email/skype etc.

To be honest, I don't think that my application isn't straightforward, there are simply a couple of small things that I am not too sure about. Anyway, I'll try to use the forum as much as I can in the first place and I'll solicit a specialist if I'm really stuck though!

Cheers,

I think maybe medical exam prices for the $500 must be in Australia right? I'm in Canada atm so I got it done in Ontario and it's typically about $250 mark.

I forgot to add to my list the national police report and my traffic history too which cost money.

Generic Application form for Canada

Hi There,

I am just about to start the process of sponsoring my common-law partner. We started filling out all the necessary forms in order to give ourselves a clear idea of what’s gonna be required so that we can have enough time to collect all the supporting documents.

Our situation looks like so:

We met back in 2008, our relationship was evolving ever since (evidence available) however we moved together on 15-FEB-2013. There are also legitimate grounds for that as well in case the CIC wants to know why we moved in together that late.

I am the sponsor (citizen) and we’ll be applying outland from Australia.

I have the following questions with regards to our Generic Application form for Canada:

APPLICATION DETAILS SECTION:

Box #2: Category under which you are applying?

Should I check COMMON-LAW or CONJUGAL? Both terms appear in various parts of the application. My bet is that it’s CONJUGAL since we live together and there’s plenty of evidence to support the latter.

Which one should I check then?

Box #3 How many members, including you, are in this application?

Since the Generic Application form for Canada deals mainly with my partner, should she still indicate the number value of 2?

Once again, there’s gonna be only the two of us. No children, parents and so forth.

Box #4: Immigration office requested for processing this application.

Logically Sydney, as we live in Australia, should I say Sydney then?

PERSONAL DETAILS SECTION:

Box #3 UCI?

What’s UCI? It looks like I cannot even fill out that box. Should I be worried about that?

Box #13 Personal marital status?

Again, should she check COMMON LAW or CONJUGAL?

I really need to know that because if it’s common law I’ll have to indicate that we met in 2008 but if it’s conjugal I’ll have to say that we moved-in in FEB 2013 but I’ll explain on an additional piece of paper that we’ve known each other since 2008

EDUCATION/OCCUPATION DETAILS SECTION:

#1 My partner is still completing her degree. If things go as scheduled, she’ll transfer to a Canadian College and obtain her final degree in Canada

Hence, what option should she check?

Should she check “secondary or less” or (the one I am leaning towards) “secondary but no degree” as she has a high school diploma and she’s currently in the process of completing her College Degree

LANGUAGE DETAIL SECTION:

#3 Have you taken a a test to assess your language skills?

My partner was born in Russia however she emigrated to France with her family as a young child. She then went to school in France (so she speaks French native level) and now she studies in Australia. Should she then bother taking any tests? I remember that she had to take IELTS before getting accepted at uni in Australia but is that still relevant given that she’s already done 2 years of College Level Education in English with very good grades?

DEPENDANTS SECTION:

This is where I got really confused?

I am a dependant given that I am the sponsor? Should she include me in this box then?

If yes, should we say that dependant will accompany principal applicant to Canada?

Cheers,

Box #13 Personal marital status? common law

Hi Canadianfairy

WOW! Thanks a lot for helping out! That'll really boost the speed at which I'll be able to complete that whole stuff.

I also have one more question BTW:

I just wrote a few things back in that thread, but just again, definitely common law, not conjugal!

"You can sponsor a conjugal partner if:
- there is a significant degree of attachment between the two of you, implying not just a physical relationship but a mutually interdependent relationship, and
- you have been in a genuine relationship for at least 12 months where marriage or cohabitation has not been possible due to barriers such as sexual orientation, religious faith, etc."

Thanks a lot folks, I'll go common law all the way through then!

On the other hand I received some conflicting information with regards to the number of people that I should include in my application.

http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/generic-application-form-for-canada-t238574.0.html

Should it eventually be 1 or 2 ? I really don't want to go wrong with this one :-X
