Yah contract is a bad thing. If, for some reason, you need to terminate it, you will have to pay the early termination fee (around $10 x number of months left).
And yes with virgin, you can go for the tab which doesn't bind you in any contract. You can easily terminate the contract just by paying the remaining price of the phone.
Nop you will not be able to exchange ANY phone with another unless you pay the remaining about of money of the tab. Like if you get 4S and after like 6months, you will have around $400 in your tab. So if you want to get a new phone (iphone 5 is not coming out any time soon
), you will have to pay off the $400 (and the previous phone will be totally yours; unlocked) and you can get a new phone in the same plan. Alongside, you can always change your plan with the same phone as long as you are above their min plan (like in my case, I have to have a plan above $50).
And if you want unlimited data in virgin, go for blackberry.
