About the milk thing.... All I have to say is when I get queasy, milk is the only thing that will calm my stomach. I have something wrong with my stomach (doctors aren't sure what right now) and milk has saved me from many days of toilet hugging. It's the only thing that works. Strange, I know, but milk does at least have a positive use.... for me. (I know I'm totally insignificant in the grand scheme of things :p) I don't drink it regularly though - only with cake ;)

Interesting article yet sooo frustrating. People like us who have true and genuine relationships have to have mounds of relationship proof and we have to put our lives on hold for a year (or longer) because of people that do things like that. So frustrating!!!

Hi

Back in the 80's I read this excellent health book called "Fit for Life" written by some doctors Diamond I believe!
In some chapter they claimed that human adults do not need milk by giving this simple example. (Not accurate as so many years have passed)
A Calf is born and it takes milk from the mother. have you ever seen a grown cow or any other mammal in that fact to breast feed when it becomes an adult? No..Just us humans. In the same why not dog's or pigs milk..We drink cow's milk because we were trained to do so from childhood!

So many people are dairy (either lactose or casein or both) intolerant that the body of evidence is leaning toward the idea that cows milk is unnecessary and in many cases just harmful. The American Association of Pediatricians recommends against cow milk for infants. If you're not intolerant and you can get some fresh raw milk from a grass fed cow though, that's definitely worth a swig!

(Another one who could talk about health until the cows come home. Pun definitely intended.

Hi Cdnmom,

I was a Race Horse owner for many years and met many folks from the East Coast ie; Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Very nice people and I have heard it is beautiful down that way. What is the weather like right now. It is about -10 up here in Ontario today. Not much in the way of snow, we just got rid of a pile of it because it was +15 last week. Is your weather just as crazy?
Our weather has been just as crazy this year... -15 one day and +10 the next... not a lot of snow but we have had some the last few days.
I am not in Newfoundland where they rec'd about 100 cm last week :(
Atlantic Canada is beautiful and the people are very nice... you should visit :)

I think many dont even know how much fake is in a lot of our food anywhere in the world! But ya your examples from china seem very extreme, i never knew that :-( its already hard to buy decent food anywhere that doesnt make you sick in any way, but china seems to make it really hard on their people to have a somewhat proper diet. Milk is anyway for no one good unless your a baby :p just wanted to mention that as well, people that consume no milk or milk-products or not much at all live healthier, a lot of lies out there about proper diets, an adult body cant take milk well anymore, we are just used to it in the most european countries, that you need sooo much calcium is a lie too (its all about balance, too much of anything makes you sick!), its all about selling. I could go on about that.....but not the right topic here haha.
I was told recently that there are hormones in milk that may cause more harm than the calcium etc it provides.

Do feel better that Canada has decent organic milk brands and Canada is a more health conscious country as compared to it's neighbour!

Interesting thread and article by the OP!

Also had to respond in regards to the milk topic! Completely understand that it's not natural to drink cow's milk as an adult, and so many people are lactose intolerant these days - But I love it so much that I have some every day (Permeate free from local farmers here in Aus) It's all pasturized, meaning it's impossible to find or make cheese curds over here (noooooooo!) But fresh milk is my daily dessert ;)

Exactly! Also all those people that have lactose(milk-sugar)-intolerance, you have no problem! Your body reacts as its supposed to react, normal, an adult body is not made anymore for taking milk once being grown out of the baby phase. And as messenger said, you learn much of animals eating behavior, they arent influenced by commercials and lies :p Our nearest relatives are monkeys, they eat mainly fruit, veggie, nuts and then a bit meat in form of eggs, insects etc. Thats how our diet should look like, theres no milk or wheat included and not a lot meat. Wheat is also not good for you, it was a mass products centuries ago to feed the masses of the poor folk, cheap and available. Its not ment to eat for us a lot. Plus meat, wheat and milk-products make your body sour, a sour body-household makes you sick! Many doctors dont even know that fact. It was declared "normal" when so many people had on test tripes a sour result cause all had it, just cause its normal to eat milk-products and wheat-products in for example most european countries. A sour body-household cause for example arthritis later on. Overly calcium doesnt help your bones anymore it makes them in the end even brittle. Healthy is a good balance between all, you need as much calcium as magnesium, an imbalance of those damages your bones and other body parts. The pharma industry and food industry has no interest in keeping people healthy, If people know this they wont buy stuff anymore. Dont throw out money for lactose pills :p your body just shows you the right way, you can be glad actually your body warns you, not all get those warnings.

Thats ok, if its not a daily thing and it helps you. I grew up with milk-products, it was hard for me too to ban it out of my life, meanwhile its easier, i dont really miss it anymore, my husbands diet is naturally (asian) without milk most of the time, he cant handle a lot of it anyway, i adjusted to that a lot. Also milk can help by heart burn, but then you use it for that and doesnt mean you consumes it in masses or daily, any other similar products helps your heart burn too though, anything with fat/oil. Theres food that makes you sour and theres food that dont, theres also neutral things you can eat as much of as you want. But every body reacts a bit different, some food that should not make you sour, it does it in your body. Basically if your body/stomach feels good with it, its ok. People have to listen to their body more often, not listen but see the signs of reaction. Theres also a big line between your body can handle it or bare it and it does your body good! Got to make a difference between those two.

Actually, it's waaaaaay easier to buy healthy food in the States. I still can't find grass fed butter (I've been here nearly 3 years) and what's up with Canadian eggs? We can get pastured chicken but finding the eggs is impossible! Apparently they went really overboard with egg restrictions so now all you can get is "free range" (not in cages but only fed grain inside a barn so no sun or bugs or grass). I don't know if it's entirely true that you can't get them, but I've certainly never found them.

We have lots of farmers markets and stuff though so that's awesome :)

yeah I find it so funny that all of the grocery stores have "rBGH-free" labels that go on to say it is totally safe to drink and they act like they are doing you a huge favor... umm yeah... not so much! I will be glad to be away from the FDA and their wait and see if it gets anyone sick way of thinking! I know that our food costs will most likely go up once we move back to Canada but I'm thinking of using it as our reason to just go to all local and as much organic as possible!

Be prepared for a sticker shock. Regular processed food is signficiantly more expensive in Canada. Organic can be 4-8x the price. The 'local' fruit is actually grown in a different province. B. C. gets most of their fruit from the US. Even the farmer's markets and fruit stands are full of produce from all over the globe. Very little home grown.
