The Easy and powerful Canada Migration Formula
(FP + HW + P + L = Settle in Canada)

This post is about our migration process to Canada. Along with the story, this may help to understand the process and formula we followed to meet the goals.

This will explain the duration we took, plans we made, and risks we accepted or mitigated, lucks favored etc…

Upon my 2.5 years of onsite assignment and return from UK, I and my family decided to explore new horizon and excitement in life. Based on that we decided to migrate to Canada. And the process started…..

*************************************************************************************

December 2015 – We decided to migrate to Canada after a long thought of 1-2 years. (May be from 2013 onward). On Dec 25, 2015, I registered for IELTS exam for me and my wife, and received the date during March 2016.

January 2016 – Even though we have multiple onsite experiences to different countries and good at English, we decided to go for IELTS class over week ends. The same month I applied for WES credentials. As we did not had time to go to university, I relied on Clear transcript agency for this.

March 2016 – We both attended IELTS. But the result was not as expected. Either one of us needed 8 in listening and 7 in rest all for scoring 421 marks. We must need that!

April-June -2016 – I attended IELTS again and not improved my score much. Again my wife attended that during June 2016. This time, she attained the expected score. Meanwhile we received the WES reports. I used clear transcript services for WES.

July 2016 – I filed our application making my wife as primary applicant. And started waiting for the CIC score to come down… Note that, it’s very easy to fill application and you do not need any support for that, if you know to read English.
We had spent money only for IELTS and WES till this point.

Long months of waiting…and I moved to UK again in November 2016. Family stayed back in India. Almost we were reaching 1 yr. since application filed and we were thinking to re-file after July 2017.

April 2017 – The points came down to 423. But ours was 421.

Again fingers crossed and waited. On the second draw on April 2017, the points came down to 415.

Yes! We received the invitation!!!!

April 2017 to May 2017 – We knew that we have 90 days to submit application. I made a plan on the collection of all required documents. As we lived in different countries during the period, I started collecting the police verification and other documents from all the places. We divided the task between me and my wife for collection of documents and filling the form.

June 2017 – We gathered all documents and completed the application form. There is no specific format for anything. It’s only how much you can detail/explain your documents and how much you can be fair and truthful on this. For all documents like proof of funds, experience – though we have all proofs and funds in place, I included covering letter explaining each details to convince immigration officer better. At last, we submitted the application on the 61st day. Still I had a month left for the last date of submission.

And now, started waiting for next steps. Either queries or clarifications from CIC or PPR request email.

July 2017- Surprisingly, within less than a month we received PPR request to send to Delhi immigration. But the challenge was, my family also moved to UK by this time. So we cannot send passport to Delhi.

At this point, I posted this query in immigration forum and one smart fellow provided me proper update. I did sent email to Delhi requesting to change the case processing office to London.

August 2017 – we received email to send passport to London Embassy. And we did that… On the same month we received the one time entry visa stamped in passport.

However, we need to make entry before 12 December 2017. This was because, my child’s first passport (used to file PR process of Canada due expire on December 12. She has a new passport now, but PR entry last date provided as 11 December 2017)

But we did not had plans to move to Canada suddenly, especially on winter.

November 2017 – After proper planning, we decided to make first entry/soft-landing in November 2017. As I have my friend in Canada, the landing and staying in Canada for a week was not difficult. We provided the address to receive PR card as my friend’s address.

During this week, I applied for SIN numbers, opened bank account and credit cards, took a postpaid mobile connection. After a week, we returned to UK.

December 2017-February 2018 – I started working out on the plans to move to Canada. Analyzing job market for us (both are in IT) and approach of movement by reducing the risk we arrived at a decision.

Meanwhile, I was paying the minimum mobile bills to keep account active and to build credit history for us (building credit history is really important, either after you land to Canada permanently or like I did after my soft landing). Maintaining credit history is much needed when you land and decide to take loan for a car etc. Though we were not in Canada, I managed mobile bill payments and maintained activity in Account.

May 2018 – My wife moved to Canada alone and stayed with our friend and family. I decided to move with child by August 2017. The plan was, my wife will land in Canada – apply and get a job before me and my child migrates. Meanwhile, I was sending some money each month to Canada bank account for her expenses plus for the expenses when me and my child lands.

May 2018 to July 2018 – My wife applied for many jobs, learned some new skills in free time, enjoyed summer, attended few interviews- but nothing worked out.

(Continued...)

August 2018
- Yes, she got a 3 months contract prior to a week of our arrival. She has applied for numerous jobs and trust me it’s not easy to get a job when you first land in Canada unless you have a niche skill in IT. We have to prepare and upskill ourselves, publish a Canadian standard resume (2 pages) and continue applying by keeping the hope. I landed by mid of August with our kid.

August-September 2018 – My primary objective was to get admission in school for our child, look for an apartment for rent and buy a car (as we lived outside Toronto, we needed a car). I completed all activities. As I was maintaining credit history in account from my soft landing in November 2017 and when my wife received 2 pay stubs, we bought a used car on loan- we got our credit check approved easily.

Surprisingly, I too received a 1-2 months contract job in IT and joined post mid of September. This was a luck as I did not applied for much jobs. I got a help from a friend who is working as recruitment manager in a firm. As he knows I am here and they needed a same skill person, I got the offer. (Of course there were multi-level interviews, including client level interviews)

We moved to new apartment and started going for the job. Kid joined school and managed morning and post school session in day care within same school campus. In Parallel, we keep on applying for a permanent role (it’s good to have permanent role to settle down)

November 2018 – My wife’s contract ended early. With luck, the same week she received a call for a full time permanent role in another firm and successfully passed interview and joined.

December 2018-January – 2019 – My contract keeps on extending and I continue apply for permanent role. It was holiday time. The recruitment slowed down and we had holidays too. We celebrated Christmas holidays with friends and family.

February 2019 – At last, I got an interview for a permanent role which suites my experience and I passed it.

But, it did not worked out due to issues to perform my US visa. This role required travel. The last step luck did not favored me here.

March 2019 – April -2019 - Keep on trying for a permanent role for me. Received some calls in between. As my contract with current job keeps on extending, I decided to look for a good role only.

May 2019 – Seems, turned out to a good month. I am informed that my current contract will extend for a long time and the parent company is offered a permanent role with them. At the same time, I have attended interview with one of Major IT service provider and I am informed as selected.

This all means, I do have 2 options available and after careful thoughts, decided to continue with my current company in a permanent role. Though salary is slightly less than other offer and will be performing more technical works than managerial duties (which I was offered in offer), I decided to go with this.

This was due to some reasons after careful thoughts such as, need to improve and build technical foundation , the offered flexibility (more vacation time, work from home etc), get more personal time for family to settle down properly in Canada, spend time for more learning and follow some other passions that I like to. Once after this may be in 1-2 years I will re-try for another job with updated skill set so to establish in the job market.

Closing Note:

With this, we are closing the migration to Canada to a successful end. However, as mentioned in title- the whole process from start to a successful end consumed 3 years and 5 months. We made many plans, followed plans strictly, worked hard at some areas to meet the plan. In between some luck favored us and some unlucky situations were also there. Over all, we are done with the major step and phases.

So, the formula I derive out of our experience is:

Follow the Plan + Hard work + Patience + Luck = Settle in Canada
(If the first three are followed, the fourth will favor automatically)

Synopsis:

1) 3 years 2 months – We consumed 3 years and 5 months for the entire process from the first phase to last phase.

2) I divided the whole activity into multiple phase by identifying risks and making mitigation plans

a. Phase 1 – Filing the application to pool after attending IELTS and achieving necessary score

b. Phase 2 – Upon receiving invitation, submit all documentation as necessary and as needed

c. Phase 3- Received PPR and did soft landing

d. Phase 4- Wife resigned job and landed to Canada first permanently and get a job

e. Phase 5 – I resigned Job and land to Canada with child and perform initial settling down activities as a family.

f. Phase 6 – Get myself into a job

g. Final Phase – Settle down in permanent jobs and move ahead for new excitements and plan.

3) Made plan A and B for each phases but with accepting necessary risks in each phase, especially in phase 4 and 6

Best Practices were:

1) Did 6 months of research through various forums and CIC website to understand regarding process prior on the decision to migrate to Canada
2) Created a plan on how I am going to approach the process
3) We followed on the plan and time lines.
4) Always truthful and fair in application and documents
5) We did not approached any consultancies

Points to note:

1) Anybody can do Canada PR themselves if they have proper plan and if they can follow that on any state/conditions with priority.
2) Consultancy cannot do any magic to get your PR. Whatever they can do, we can do in this matter
3) CIC website carries all information on what you need to do. More over refer to forum topics

Last note:

There is no easy way and short cuts for migration. The current process by the Canada government is the straight forward and simple way… All the best for those who are in process of migration

If you find the above as useful in any method, please let me know – I will write my 'post landing' experience and process followed after that.

Thanks.
