So, here's what my sponsor's e-CAS says (the names below are not my actual name):

We received your application to sponsor WILLIAM HANFORD TAFT on October 22, 2009.

We started processing your application on November 5, 2009.

We sent you a letter on November 5, 2009 about the decision on your application. Please consider delays in mail delivery before contacting us.
The problem is that my middle name is Howard, not Hanford. How do we get them to fix this? My sponsor's father spent five years trying to get citizenship (finally got it this year) because somebody had misspelled his name in the 1970s and they were convinced that he was somebody else who had spent some time in jail. ("I think my wife and daughter would remember that…")

Do I have to wait until Buffalo starts processing the application (they clearly haven't yet, because e-CAS still doesn't know who I am).

No, do it now send the correct name. Although it should be corrected by the processing office to match your passport and birth certificate that you submitted.

I don't see a phone number for Mississauga, and we don't have a client number yet because we haven't received the letter. Should I wait until we get that letter?

I had the same thing happen to me. I was instructed to send them a copy of my birth certificate/passport or anything legal that had the correct spelling of my middle name. I had my ID number so I quoted that on there as well. i sent it to CIC and the visa office that was dealing with my 'husbands case. CIC made the change but the visa office didn't.

call the toll free number - they will give you your client number right away, before even you get a letter. at the same time explain your problem to them - they will advise you what to do. be prepared to send your passport, id and birth certificate as a proof.
good luck!

I'm not in Canada at the moment, so I'll contact Buffalo once we get the client ID number (which we probably will before the next time I'm in Canada).

Hi everyone,

I am in the same boat. When my husband was approved for the sponsorship, they sent him a letter with my correct full name and when we check the status online it is still correct, but when our application was sent to Buffalo, I check my application status online and see that my first name is wrongly spelled. it must be HA instead of THU. What can I do? Do I need to mail them or call the visa office? I did send them the copy of my passport with the application.
