My wife, A Canadian, wants me to ask if the CIC can change my venue for my Oath. My test is in Edmonton but most of my family resides in Calgary and they would like to be there to see me take the oath.

My wife insists that the CIC "can't be that insensitive and inflexable"

Should I ask (if they tell me every thing is ok), or just do as they tell me?

If you asked for your oath ceremony to be moved, you'll end up with a new oath date and may end up waiting several additional months. So take that into consideration before you ask for this change. Also, you should be aware that many oath venues only have room for a small number of guests. When my husband took his oath, they only allowed one guest per oath taker into the room.

Strongly recommend do not take chances, god has given you the opportunity avail
re schedule or transfer the file from are to another will take you at least 6-8 months
suffering if your family want to come let them join with you or you can capture the
movement on your phone and transmit instantly..... but do not postponed the
events..

Hi,
Does your test invite say how many guests you can have?
Mine clearly stated that should I get invited for oath, I can only bring 1 guest!
After my interview, the officer briefed me as well and mentioned that when you come for your oath you can either come by yourself or bring 1 guest only!
So not sure changing your venue would help anyway!
All the best and congrats :)

Your place of residence determines which Local Office handles your application including test and oath. So for a start since you don't live in Calgary any approach will get bounced or in the very remote possibility of any consideration there will be some to and fro while someone 'In Charge' at both Edmonton and Calgary Local Offices makes a decision. I can tell you this will make your processing take its sweet time. If every applicant tried to do as you propose there would be a logistical issue for CIC. The message is that you fit around CIC not CIC fitting around you. Congrats and good luck

LOL....you need to ask your wife to read people experiences on this forum instead of asking CIC to change your Oath venue.

ERJOPA, be careful with the intent to accommodate your entire family during the oath. When I took my oath in Kitchener, every new citizen was allowed to bring one guest only (other people had to wait outside). Besides a limited capacity, there are also fire regulations that require a cap. So even if you move the oath, most of your family members might not be able to attend.

I guess the question is: Does the CIC have internal rules regarding this issue? Do they have the capacity to change the location for an applicants oath if asked nicely?

What is the rule on this anyway...is it a hard and fast rule that once your application is transferred to the "local office", that's it?

Dependabill...what are your thoughts?

I still will take the oath, it's just if it is in Edmonton, my Canadian family, who supported me and guided me to this point, will not be there to enjoy it with me.

It looks like I (thankfully) I will not have a same day oath/test day. But I still need some insight into my query here.

Depenabill...I know you are just a forum person like the rest of us here, but do you have any thoughts on my question in this thread?

Mostly I agree with the comments by others here. (By the way, I was off doing Canadian north woods, blue lakes, kayaking and hiking and fishing stuff, for awhile, no digital connection for over a week . . . the good life.)

Even larger venues often limit the number of guests. (For mine, as I recall, the notice referred to a limited number of guests but the venue actually was very large compared to the number of us taking the oath, and it was clear some had a half dozen or more guests accompanying them, no one was checking as we entered the hall where the ceremony was taking place . . . but I live in a small city, many hundreds of kilometres from any substantial sized city, this was an itinerant services event, and the number taking the oath was barely over fifty.)

The oath ceremony is indeed a big day for many. And ceremonial big days do indeed go better with family to share the event. But CIC is not particularly accommodating in general, let alone in particular.

I do not know whether CIC will entertain a request for an alternative oath venue. In the past it would for those whose oath would ordinarily be provided as part of itinerant services, but this is mostly about allowing the individual to accept attending an oath ceremony in the primary local office venue rather than waiting for the next itinerant oath event for where that individual lives (some itinerant events can be up to a full year apart). It is worth noting that this does not involve a different local office, as it is still the same local office.

I do not know what the relationship is between Edmonton and Calgary, whether they are separate local offices or whether one is the primary local office and the other a location where itinerant services are provided.

If they are different local offices, my impression (I do not know) is that there would be no accommodation made in the circumstances you describe, but as others have indicated, making the request could easily cancel this scheduled oath and result in a long wait before it is rescheduled.

Mostly I suggest having a family event to celebrate, if that is what is desired, apart from the actual ceremony itself. This is what we did, in effect, although it was here and just later in the same day.

For many of us it is indeed an event to celebrate . . . and earlier this year, we celebrated the anniversary of it as well.
