Hi I'm hoping someone else has been through something similar to this before and may have some advice...
My partner and I both applied to the International Experience Canada programme in January 2013. His has been approved, so he has until February 2015 to activate that 2-year working visa. Mine was denied because I have a criminal conviction on my record from New Zealand in 2009. I know I can't apply for rehabilitation until at least 5 years after the end of my sentence, which is May 2015. I can apply for a Temporary Work Permit however. I have strong ties in Toronto and also have a job offer there.
Has anybody applied for...and been granted... a Temporary Work Permit due to criminal inadmissibility?? It seems very dependant on the immigration officer who deals with your case, rather than strict black and white rules. We are thinking of hiring an immigration lawyer but fees are obviously an issue....is it really worth the expense or should we chance going it alone?? If anyone has been granted a TRP...how long did it take and would you recommend seeking legal aid?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated...Thanks!!!
