I remain in Canada.
Now the temporary resident visa expired, but the work permit is still valid.

Am I now illegal in Canada?

You are LEGAL. You may stay in Canada and even travel to the USA without a valid visa. If you travel to any other country you will need a visa to return.

Nope! You are still legal! My visa expired in sept last year (I still have a valid study study permit). I am still here!

The only thing is you need to have a visa if you plan to travel outside the country and want to re-enter canada. They won't allow you just based on the permit!

Please note: You can travel to States with your permit (and other documents showing you live/work/study in Canada) but thats only valid if you are crossing the border by land, my university international student counselor had said that most of the time the Airlines don't know about the rule to allow foreign nationals back on flight to canada with permits. I have always followed this rule and I was okay!

are u saying the op can travel to the states without US visa??? can I travel there with my work permit??

No you obviously need US Visa... this is about coming back from USA! When you have to enter canada using Air travel they ask just more than Work/Study Permit! The airlines want to see the Visa... its not the same case with land crossing, if you show enough supporting documents like letter from employer, lease, bank statements they allow you in since you visa is expired but work/study permit is still valid!

I just remain in Canada never travel.

My visa expires but work permit is valid, then I am still legal, right?

Nope. I've done it. I flew to the states and came back without a valid visa.

Hello Everyone,
I have applied for my PR under CEC and have received my AOR already and with that AOR I have recently also applied for my BOWP. I am currently unemployed and I am on EI.
I am currently on a Valid Closed Work permit which expires in September 2014.

I live in Toronto, Canada and my friends and me are planning on a trip to Disneyland for a week in the USA, I do have a B1/B2 Visitors Visa for the USA which expires in October 2022 (which was issued in Canada).

We will be traveling my car to go to the USA. I wanted to know if I can exit Canada to go to the USA with my friends and then re-enter Canada safely and without any hassels with immigration at the border.
Or
Is there some kind of Canadian VISA that I would have to apply for to re-enter back into Canada (in addition of the other documents that I already have - which are mentioned above) in addition of the American Visitors Visa (B1/B2 - October 2022) that I already have.

I thank you in advance for your responses and any advice will be greatly appreciated as I prefer to clear all the doubts in my head to avoid any problems with immigration at the borders.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Once you are inside Canada, your work permit is your permission. So if you have a work permit valid till 2020, you are welcome to stay inside Canada till 2020.

If you travel outside Canada, you need a Canadian valid Visa to come back (like going home in India for a visit, or to see the pyramid in Egypt, or just visiting a friend in Spain etc - you get my point).

Though if you have a USA visa, you can travel to USA from Canada and come back (even if your Canadian visa has expired). But you still need your valid work permit. I saw a link to CIC website regarding this matter, cannot find it now :(

If you are lucky they may just look at your passport, and let you go (without even entering any information on the computer).
