My apologies if a similar issue has been posted previously.

My husband immigrated from the U.S. to Canada as my spouse (permanent resident status). After about a year of living together in Canada, we were both offered significant professional development opportunities that we expect to take us outside of Canada for 3-5 years. We intend to return to Canada afterwards and continue in our fields with heightened credentials.

With being outside of Canada for 3-5 years, my husband is unlikely to meet his permanent residency obligations. Is anyone aware of exceptions or special filings that may allow us to take part in these international opportunities without my husband losing his status? I know there is a provision for traveling with a spouse who is a Canadian citizen, but I will have residency status abroad and am unsure if we will qualify as "traveling".

If both of you are outside of Canada together and you are a citizen, then your husband will be able to use the time spent outside of Canada towards the residency requirement for PR (but not for citizenship). His PR status will be fine.
