Temporary Health Insurance for a year

My friend will be coming to Canada(Vancouver) in February of 2015 and plans to stay a full year. Hes looking for health insurance since it's better to be prepared than not be prepared.

So hes wondering whats the "best", most reliable/reputable and less costly company to go with for health insurance and how much coverage do people usually get or should he get?

Aside from Health Insurance, what other insurance should he consider getting or recommend getting?
