Damn, I think this just another way by the government of fleecing money from immigrants and nothing else.....
Like every thing else in Pakistan the original intent was good. They used to make it mandatory for a person to attend a briefing during this protectorate thing. In it they explained a worker's rights, who to contact if you have issues there, what you can do and what you can't do etc etc. Details of travel i.e. what you can or cannot take along. Basically helping with every thing that makes things easy for a new traveler. Unfortunately it has turned into a business and now people just pay and get the stamp. :)

Emm.. No. You just have to have APPLIED for NICOP. Don't need the card itself. The procedure is you go to NADRA, apply for it and get a RECEIPT.

That receipt is sufficient to get the rest of protectorate process done and passport stamped. Stamp on passport is the key to leave Pakistan. However, do know that it will require your all other docs, a good amount of money 6-10k per person and NADRA will keep your original NIC. The NICOP will be issued some time latter depending upon whether you applied for regular or urgent one. I guess the urgent one costs around 10k on its own and regular one, around 4-5k. It will be mailed to you latter - so some contact of you here in Pak can collect and send it to you.
And one more question, what do you mean by forfeiting the NIC? I will be needing the CNIC for getting my passport stamped?

The details are a bit hazy in my mind. I will have to ask a friend who has exactly been through this. But at some point (either when applying for NICOP or latter), you have to give them your NIC. Probably getting the stamp at protectorate, would only need a photocopy of NIC and receipt for NICOP. To be safe, keep copies of both and whenever you are asked to submit original, ask them about the stamp first.

Sure - np. I only know because i have friends who have been through this and told me latter. I even know people who didn't know, went to airport and were sent back. They had to postpone their flight and pay the difference. A reschedule done a couple of hours before the flight cost you a lot of money specially if the next available flight costs higher :).

Also remember, its valid only for 30 days. If you have to wait, at max one can request and get a few days extension. Else you have to redo this whole protectorate process again.

A friend of mine got it done for him and his wife along. They were not travelling together, the wife had to come a month latter. They got stamp together, because if not done so, the wife will have to take her father along. I heard something like for a female to get protectorate stamp, you need to have either husband or father along. She can't even get that alone on her own as a policy of govt. of pakistan.

So in my friend's case they requested and some how gotten an extension of 15 days on the stamp, because after a month when she was about to travel, they were roughly over the 30 day expiry of stamp by like 10 days or so. Then she traveled on the same stamp. Otherwise, it had to be done all over again.

You mean the medical that is required as part of protectorate? I am not sure, will have to ask some body who went through it. But as far as i remember, since medicals were already done as part of your visa process for Canada, it probably is not required.

First off, congratulations on getting your passport request!

Now, for yourself, definitely you have to get it done, i.e., get your passport stamped. As @ fkl pointed out yesterday, you have to get your passport stamped for work permit or open work permit. But what's a little confusing is that with your open work permit, i assume you don't necessarily have a job offer yet? If you have a job offer, then its all fine, but if you don't, then I'm not sure what you'll enter in the Employer section of the form that Protectorate office provides you.. The form can be found here http://www.beoe.gov.pk/Forms.asp ....... I think we'll have to choose the Direct Registration Form

For your spouse, if its open work permit, then again, you'll have to get it stamped.

For kids, no need as it is applicable only to work permit visas.

That's all I can say to the best of my knowledge :p

Yes I saw that form and was wondering the same... What to write in employer column... May be I'll let the 'qualified agents' working outside the offices take care of it ... In exchange of some 'Hamil-e-haza ko mutalbey per Ada karey ga' :)

While skimming thru the site I didn't see any mention of protectorate validity of 30 days only... Does it still stand??? As I may not be going in next 30 days... It kinda suck though... I have to time it like that :(...

As far as i know, yes the validity stands. So consider it a risk on your own.

http://www.wikihow.com/Get-Your-Passport-Stamped-from-Protectorate-of-Emigrants-in-Pakistan
The above link states that it is valid for 30 days only. Moreover, my friends went around Mar 2013, and it was enforced back then for sure. In one case, the primary applicant had to go early and his wife had to come after like 25 days or so. They had to some how get extension for additional 15 days. They did get it but it needed some effort.

Ok.... Better safe than sorry so will get it 30 days prior to leaving....

BTW... Another's question.... In terms of luggage and stuff that can be taken... You know the kind of desi stuff, pots and pans and things like that, that usually people immigrating to canada take with them... will i also be allowed to take it with me on TRV or i need to have proper immigration visa to take that kind of stuff..???

Similarly I read it somewhere on these forums about 'goods to follow' kind of form/ option... Things that u can ship it later... Will I have this option available on this OWP/TRV visa???
