Buried in one of the threads is information on taxes and what some are experiencing while going through the family sponorship.

Thought it might be beneficial to have a thread just for taxes-unless one was started already?

Who's experiencing tax/GST issues? What should our Canadian spouses be on the look out for?

There are always ways around paying taxes...some legal, some illegal, some unknown if legal or not...but there is always a way. For example, you need to get some work done on your car. You go to a smaller shop and talk to the owner...ask if he can do the job for cash and not record anything...a lot will do it, as they also have to pay a lot in tax...not saying to go out and break the law, but if you really can't afford to pay for what's needed + the taxes, then try to reduce the expense by negotiating...

True, but there's no way around income taxes and CRA's stupidity in adding a husband (in my case) who does not have a SIN *grumble* haha

CRA and CIC are cut from the same cloth!! I'm sure we can all come up with questionable adjectives to describe them!

LMAO explain?? I am American and my husband explained nothing to me I got the crash course lol but the lady @ the CRA was very helpful and explained everything to me. and yes you guys do get taxed more up here but you get a lot more benefits from the government...the state I came from was 6% federal is what 5% I believe so in reality it isn't that much of a difference depending on the state, and we don't get HST, sales tax credits, child benefits, nothing other then the yearly refund of course if you qualify... oh and of course your medical comes out of taxes to...

I actually was happy to see my husband was a tax benefit to me while he is still in Cuba, saved me about $3000 on taxes this year! However, they keep trying to say I now owe money from 2010 because of being married...I wasn't married in 2010! I call them, they say 'Whoops, never mind' and then a month later, another letter saying I owe money from 2010. It's like $70, I feel like they know if they keep at it long enough I'll just give in and send it to them in order to be left alone!

Dealing with CRA is like chewing on tin foil while shaving with a cheese grater

We got married April 7th 2012... and his taxes were re-assessed back to 2009. She tried to explain to me how and why it was done that way but honestly I didn't even wanna understand how they work LOL I just sent what she asked me for and 3 months later it's done I signed letter of presumption so that if I have to leave Canada before PR is issued he won't have to do anything and will still receive his CCTB.
