Hi team!

I am new to QUEBEC. arrived on 1st AUG 2013 and will be here till MACH 2014. Having package of 70K

will I need to pay tax for 2013?

some people talk about 183 day clause, which is 6 months period. if I stay till March 2014, will I need to pay tax for 2013 and 2014 also? or 183 days clause starts again from day one from 2014?

Will I be exempted from tax for 2013 and 2014 also? pls suggest

Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Hello supamh10,

Paying tax in Canada depends on whether or not you have established residential ties. Residential ties are things like location of family, house, employment, bank accounts, etc. If, in August, you are considered to have established your ties in Canada, then you will be a part-year Canadian resident in 2013. If that is the case, then you will be taxed on your worldwide income that you earn after August 1.

When you leave Canada for good in March, you will have to reassess your residential ties again at that time. If you become a non-resident of Canada on March 2014, then you will not have to worry about paying tax in Canada after March.

The 183-day rule, also known as the 'sojourner' rule, determines residency if you otherwise were not one in the first place. This depends on a few things, like the country of your residence before arrival, residential ties, etc.

I hope that makes sense. This is a tricky topic, and you should get someone to look at your situation in a wholesome/complete way.

Thanks for your valuable inputs!

i am from india, and i am indian.

I am not holding canada PR and i am short vistit to canada with family.

As long as i am in canada within 183 days clause, for that finanicail year, i heard that i can claim my tax, which i have paid for federal and Quebec tax.

Is this correct, as far as i heard???

If this 183 days clause is applicable, so for 2013 i can claim the tax paid and for 2014 also i can claim the tax paid, as i will be leaving in MARCH 2014. is it????

Cheerssss!!!!!
