I'll be going on a holiday to Canada in January next year and will be taking my portable DVD player and hard drive with me, the movies that are on the hard drive (about 220) are all copied on from DVD's that I own (all bought legally). If searched, can the Border Officer claim that the material on the HD is pirated? And if so, how could I prove it's not?

You should seriously consider using strong encryption on any media being carried, especially if it has sensitive information on it, such as financial or personal records. Use a hardware key as well as a strong password for two factor authentication. Make sure that you are not in possession of the hardware key as you travel but have it sent by someone you trust after you have passed through Customs etc.

OK, the above is overkill for most people but it's an example of how to securely move data on media.

The only thing it will have on it is movies and that's it, won't have any personal info on it etc. Since it's only a holiday it's more to watch on the plane and in the hotel at night rather than pay for movies.
