Can anyone confirm that whether T4A slips are fine for applying under CEC?

Hi Cos,
Thanks for your update. I am also worrying about T4A. As you are fine, I hope it will be the same for me.

I am a postdoc too, I applied under 2111, which is a physicist though, since postdoc classification isn't really a good fit for me.
As a postdoc I am receiving T4, but I remember that perhaps during some years i was getting T4A, not sure.
My question is actually different. I realized that I forgot to supply a Notice of Assessment. I hope it won't be ground for refusal.
I am currently in the process of obtaining it, and I hope I can just scan and email it. I called CRA and they said it will take about 10 days for it
to reach me.
Anyone has any experience with NOA missing from the application package?

Hi varag,

I have applied with T4A slips too and have just received my AOR.
As long as you show that tax has been deducted from your income, i mean you are paying tax for Canadian government, you are good to go. I called CIC and confirmed it with them.

NOA is a vital document for CEC assessment. I will just send them a mail (both email and surface) explaining that I did not have it at application filing time - if you have not already done that.

ok, I will send it once I get it (10 days or so).
I simply missed it in the list of documents, didn't know it's a vital one.
Now I am a bit worried, but I've done everything I can, so can't really do more then what I've done at this point.
I have to wait for it to arrive, and then I will send it immediately.

Only other thing I could try is to send a letter to CIC stating that I realized I had forgotten to include the NOA with
my application, and I am in the process of obtaining it (applied and waiting for it to arrive) and will send it to them
as soon as I get it.

what do you guys think?

Although there are no guarantees with CIC, that is what I will do. It at least calms you down a bit, knowing you have made some positive efforts...

Thank you! I agree, I will do it.
But I thought a bit more about it, and one thing doesn't sit quite well with me.
I filed in May, got AOR in September and got a document request in November,
so I would say that they should have reviewed all the documents (whether they are included or not).
They requested PCCs which I didn't include, since I was still obtaining them.
Later on I sent all the PCCs, and now I am just waiting...
and while waiting I realized that I forgot to include the NOA. So I'll email it as soon as I will get it, but I have a feeling they are probably ok without me
submitting it, otherwise I should have heard something by now. Although CIC is full of surprises as someone say.
Oh well, will do what I can do and will hope for the best.
thanks again for clarifying that NOA is so important to submit. For some reason I completely overlooked it. My T4 already states how much taxes I payed.

Thanks Cos, I also called the CIC call services. They confirmed that:

-Postdoctoral fellowships count as employment
-T4 and T4A tax slips are both fine. It doesn't make a difference for the CEC application.

However, I advise you contact the call services yourself.

I am postdoc form University of Toronto, with T4A (applied at Feb 2013, my status is still "Application Received").
I know some postdocs from UofT who were accepted, and some postdocs who were rejected basing on T4A (in general, T4A is for self-employment and scholarships). This is because some immigration officer do not know about our situation and made wrong decisions.

There are different definitions of employee. According to work definition (not taxation!), postdocs are employee, since: (1) we work full-time, (2) we use University equipment, (3) we are forbidden to work outside the University. Therefore, postdocs are eligible for CEC program. I wrote something like this in my cover letter, and I ask my referees to write it for me. I also wrote that many other Canadian universities had already switched to T4 taxation policies. (I can send an example if someone is interested).

If you are planning to include your contract to your application, read it carefully before doing this, may be it has something that can look suspicious for immigration officer (if you have T4A). And this is not mandatory to include your contract.

You can also write that Ontario Labour Relations Board determined that postdoctoral fellows should be considered as full-time employees within the meaning of the Labour Relations Act. You can ask for more details CUPE: http://cupe3902.org

Hi grishan1,
Is there any progress for your application? I receive my GCMS form and it shows that only criminality is in progress, anything else not start.
Good Luck!

I just got MR (submitted application at the end of Feb 2013):
1. I had T4A, and explanation from accountant office saying that postdocs are not self-employment, they work 40 hours per week on university equipment, and their taxes are recorded on T4A for taxation purpose only
2. My supervisor wrote that I was employed in his letter
3. My NOC was 2174 (as in work permit), and letter from my supervisor corresponded to description of NOC 2174 at CIC web-site

4. Note that description for NOC "postdoc" (4011) is mostly about teaching, giving lectures and checking students home assignment. So if you are using NOC for postdoc you should be very careful. Read this case of rejection: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t172731.0.html

Thanks and congratulation, grishan1!

My situation is as follows:
1. I had a cover letter to explain that I'm a T4A postdocs but not self-employment.
2. My supervisor wrote that I was employed and work 40 hours per week in his letter.
3. My NOC was 4162 (not the same as in work permit), and letter from my supervisor corresponded to description of NOC 4162 at CIC web-site

Hope I can also go smoothly!

Call for help with the CEC application as a Poctdoc:
I am a postdoc working in UofT with T4A for tax and most of my salary comes from an external funding, a postdoc fellowship in an European country (my boss in UofT only pay 20% to top it up). I wonder if anyone has experiences on such cases. Will the external source of salary undermine the CEC eligibility? Many thanks.
