sx-1 visa

Hi,
My friend came on sx1 visa (5 year multi entry visa)& he got only one month entry permission after that,he applied for extension(waiting for extension) and want stay here as a regular student pls advice us it's possible ? If yes than how he can get the study permit? Second question if he go back to his country and apply for study permit than again he has to apply for new visa or same visa will be ok for as a regular student?
