Surrender Certificate & OCI Indian Citizens only

I am gonna ask this question as simple as possible to understand if Indian nationals who acquire Canadian citizenship can also apply for OCI while requesting for renouncing Indian citizenship?

In short can request be made for both surrender certificate and OCI at the same time?

Obtaining Surrender certificate 2-3 weeks

OCI sticker 15 days

Booklet which I am assuming some sorta passport looking booklet 6-8 weeks

so in total over 2 months to get OCI stuff done? Isn't that too long??

NO, First you have to apply for Surrender Certificate.


Do 1 thing, Apply for Canadian Passport First (delivery time is 1-2 weeks),Next day Apply for Surrender Certificate takes 2 Weeks.
So when u get both Canadian Passport and Surrender Certificate, Apply for OCI (takes 8-10 Weeks)

When I applied for OCI @ Toronto, They took my Original COPR, Original Indian Passport, Original Canadian Passport, Original Citizenship Papers along with photocopies and 2 sets of Forms. U get the originals back in 1-2 Weeks.

Then u check ur status On line (mha web site), when the Status says OCI Granted and Documents Recd @ Toronto,(7-8 weeks after intial Submission) u take the printout of computer Screen and submit that printout with your Canadian Passport for OCI Sticker, after a Week , u get OCI Booklet (kind of passport,but no pages for Visa etc) and lifelong-Multiple entry Visa Sticker on your Canadian Passport.

For Traveling to India on OCI, u need to carry OCI Booklet and Canadian Passport.

When ur Canadian passport expires, u can get the sticker transferred to current Canadian passport or travel with your current Canadian passport, expired Canadian passport with OCI visa sticker and OCI booklet.

In Brampton, Passport Canada and BLS office are in same plaza (Rona is there) on Gillingham Drive (Bovaird Dr & Hurontario St)

Passport Canada

Leave it to the Indian embassy to complicate everything ...

I would recommend you wait for your Canadian passport before applying for surrender certificate. YOu need to give the passport details in the application form. The instructions do say you can submit a letter stating why you do not have canadian passport while surrendering indian citizenship. But you never know what our Babus would do....

why one would require an oci ??
i am not a frequent traveller to india .do i need a oci or can i just get a visa for india when i want to travel there?

i believe you have to notify the police everytime you visit India. that's the rule. read the benefits of OCI on the BLS page. also you can't have bank accounts, etc without OCI. if you only visit once every 3/4 years just to visit, then it should be okay to have a visa.

I took canada oath along with my minor daughter today 06 Aug 2014. Will apply for passport by friday on urgent basis.
My question is Can I apply for Surrender certificate and Student visa for my minor child on URGENT basis to reduce the time required from 3 weeks for surrender certificate and 2 week for student visa. BLS told me to try with CGI-Toronto. I plan to apply for surrender cert and entry visa for myself on Urgent basis. What are my chances of getting it? I have school proof to show them for my daughter. Plus my employment letter in middle east to show.

What is the alternative? Apply for tourist visa valid for 6 months - which does not need surrender certificate - BLS told me. Proceed to india and apply for OCI in India. Does anybody have any experience on OCI application in mumbai? In that case can I do the surrender certificate in India.

Typically how long does OCI take if applied from India. Do they keep the canada passport. Can I travel before expiry of tourist visa say to middle east, make another tourist visa and return to india.
