Supervisa - Income document based on US income

Hi Fellow Forum users,

I am currently working in US and would like to sponsor my parents for supervisa to Canada. I'm a Canadian permanent resident in Quebec and the required income threshold won't be a problem. The problem is that I only have US income. In regards to this, can I be eligible? If so how can I show US income?

And having a rental apt or owning a house in Canada sufficient to satisfy residency requirements?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

No - you're not eligible. The income must be from Canadian sources. They will need to apply for a regular visitor visa.

To clarify, is the purpose of Income threshold the source of income or is it to show that I can afford to sponsor for supervisa? Wouldn't US W2 (tax documents) be sufficient to show this?

I'm not an expert on supervisas but I believe the issue is that you have to show proof that you can support your parents while living in Canada. Since you do not live in Canada (yet), I'm not sure you are eligible to sponsor them. Basically CIC wants to know how you will support your parents when you do move to Canada since your current US income will not be applicable once you move back (unless you will still be employed and work remotely from Canada).

I am planning to commute back and forth and also work remotely from Canada. So it is like I will be in Canada for few days and in US for days. The locations aren't that far from border of each side.

I am also hoping someone else in similar position to mine shed some light as I am sure I am not the first person to be in this situation.

if you move back and declare yourself a tax resident of Canada and start filing Canadian tax returns on that income, perhaps you have a chance but even that sounds unlikely. But i really don't know much about supervisas so I can't offer much insight.

You're responding to a post from 8 years ago. You'll need to provide your CRA NOA. So as long as you declared your income in your Canadian tax return, you should be OK.

scylla, Thank you for the quick response. I have been filing tax returns in both US and Canada and have NOA up until 2022 so I can provide the latest NOA. Is that the only requirement? Is it going to cause any issue for showing US employer and US income? (I am well over the required income threshold)

You should be OK as long as you live in Canada.

So then your parents don’t qualify for as supervisa. A supervisa is for parents to be able to visit their children in Canada

supervisa is for your parents to stay in Canada for a longer period of time WITH you. Why do you want them to be in Canada when you are not here?
You may want to look into US visitor visa for them so they can visit you.
