Hi! We are applying for a Super Visa for my mother to enable her to visit longer than 6 months. She currently has a valid multiple entry 10 year visa expring in 2028 but this only allows for a max of 6 months at a time. The Super Visa is a better option for staying longer than 6 months. Saves a lot of flying back and forth. My question for our planning is - Once the Super Visa is granted, is there any time limit for her to be in Canada from the granted date? Any sort of 'activation' required? If her visa is granted in April 2025 for example, could she choose to visit her daughter in Canada in January 2026 without issues or would she be required to make the first visit within a certain time period from the granted date?

She can visit at any point during the validity of the supervisa. So if approved now and passport stamped an entry in 2026 should be no problem.

Many thanks! Is the medical insurance a requirement for the Super Visa application or can that be obtained (proof shown) for when she enters Canada? We will probably buy insurance from a Canadian company but it makes sense that it is purchased in time for her trip to Canada rather than when the visa application is made?

Requirement to apply. If not provided with the application, she would be issued a regular TRV.

You can purchase but then postpone coverage to coincide with travel period. What IRCC really wants to see is she both qualifies for a policy and you can pay for one.
