Hello,

My husband and I are both working in Ontario. He has a work permit and will complete his 1 year in October 2016. I have an open work permit and will complete my 1 year in Jan 1017. I have below queries before we apply.

1) He will be the primary applicant, can we apply directly once he finishes his one year or it makes more sense for us to wait and then apply once I have completed one year?
2) How long does it take to get the PR through CEC?
3) Also, for IELTS, is it mandatory for both the applicants or it is fine if the main applicant has IELTS score.

Cheers,
Shilpi

Job Offer........
Pre-Assessed..
1. Once he finished 1 year full time then he can apply straight away.
2. Average around 4-6 months.
3. English language test, either IELTS or CELPIP are mandatory only for primary applicant, but if you want to boost more scores so the accompany can take a test also.

Depends - if he has a "valid job offer", then you will have enough points without waiting for you to complete 1 year. If he does not have a valid job offer, he can still submit the profile, but you will earn more points (and be more likely to get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) after you complete 1 year.

A "valid job offer" requires 2 things - an LMIA, and a written offer of permanent employment, contingent upon his obtaining PR status.

2) How long does it take to get the PR through CEC?

It varies... Once you submit a complete application, CIC's goal is to process 80% of applications within 6 months...

3) Also, for IELTS, is it mandatory for both the applicants or it is fine if the main applicant has IELTS score.

Language tests are mandatory for the principal applicant, optional for the spouse, however, it will affect your CRS score if you do not have it.

Note that CELPIP is an alternative to the IELTS.

Thank you for the response!
My husband is working with big IT giant and has his LMIA done by his employer.

Thanks again for the info about CELPIP test.

One more question - I am here on open work permit and I don't have LMIA. Will my experience (total of 10 months by October) still earn points?

Cheers,
Shilpi

Does not matter if you have an LMIA or not, as long as the work is authorized (you have a work permit, so it is authorized).

However, there are no points for Canadian experience until you have completed at least 1 year. See the CRS scoring system at the link below, and scroll down to the Spouse section.
