Hello,
I have been visiting this forum for lot of information and i have always been successful in finding the same. I wanted to share my PR landing experience using AVR here. I hope it can help others who plan to do their landing.

Family of 3 (kid 3 yr old).

Rented a car from CT, drove to Buffalo, NY and stayed over nite on 03/10. Checked out on 03/11 and drove towards Peace brdge (20 Mins from Hotel in Buffalo). No checks from US side, mean no one was stopping, so continued to Canada. Stopped at the booth, traffic was low.

Officer : Why are u here
Me : PR Landing blah blah blah. Declared currency > 10K, received the yellow slip, pulled over to the side and parked. Walked into the office.

No people other than the Immigration/Customs officer. Immigration was a breeze. Just had to wait for them to go through the docs and finish their entry. Please note, the lady their asked me to show the cashier check. Signed and all done (20 mins), Kid is runing all over the place. IO asked me if i have goods list, said yes, so directed me to the customs

Officer took the B4 form. He was not happy with what i had put in ( I had entered only my name :D). So he pulled another B4 form, filled it in for me. Asked for the goods to follow (B4A), here I had not added the total ($ amount) from all the items. He asked me to sum it up, did the same. He asked for the Car VIN (had forgotten to mention). But, had it with me. Then he stamped everything, made another copy for me and gave me the receipt for the proof of funds (cashier check). This took around 40 mins. Kid still running all over the place ;D

Came out from office, took the car, paid the 3$ toll, had EZpass. Then drove to Niagara falls. Evening went to Mississauga to meet a friend.

Today went in the morning to SIN office. Had prefilled application forms. She took it, did all the entry from the prefilled form and gave us oor SIN in 15 mins. Card will be mailed to the address provided. Took around 30 mins as she had to do it for 3 ppl.

Went down to Niagara falls. Spent 2 hrs there. Decided to head back towards US.

Last entered US in 2007 on L2, changed to H1 then changed to another company. No H1 stamping and have not been out of the country since last entered on L2. Wife on expired H4. Kid US citizen.

Bit tensed as i was nearing the Peace bridge. It was around 2PM. Traffic very light. Handed the officer the passports (old expired I94 attached to passport) with the I797 copies. Also declared that i am carry a cashier check of > 10K USD.
Officer - Which country citizens are you
Me - X, Y and Z
Officer - Why did you go to Canada.
Me - PR Landing, Niagara falls and visiting friend's place.
Officer - Do you have tobacco/alcohol in your trunk.
Me - No.
Officer went to another booth, spoke something with the other guy, came back to me and asked if i was ever out of country since my last visit into country. I said no. He went to another booth, spoke for some time, then came to me. He then gave me a white slip and asked me to go inside. Parked my car and went inside. Waited for 20 mins. Had my name called. All the 3 of us went to the counter.

Officer - Have you ever been out of US since the last visit.
Me - NO
Officer - Where do you stay in US
Me - CT
Officer - When were you there in CT last.
Me - 2 days back.
Officer - Why are you having a check of > 10K
Me - Had to show POF for PR landing and one of the accepted format was a cashier check.
Officer - OK, you are all set. Meet me on the other side

Relieved and walking back, then got called to another booth, where a lady wanted to see the check and then she explained to the officer (who took my interview) that it is ok as it is not been signed and it was issued in my name.

Got the white slip stamped and handed it over at the exit door. Came back to my car and drove back.

Please note that, i was carrying all the documents with me. I did not mention to any of the officers explicitly about AVR.

Hope this helps. Sorry its long, but tried to be as detailed as possible. I understand the concerns.

Hi kannadakanmani,

I am in a similar situation as you and planning to do my Landing by driving from Buffalo to Toronto. My US bank told me that they do not give Traverler's checks anymore. So I got a Cashier's check just like you did.

Did you face any resistance from the Canadian officers (or US when returning) because you have a cashier's check on your own name?

Also, did you have issues getting your PR card because you were planning to drive back to the US? Did Canadian border officials ask you any questions?

Thanks,
RG

Hi Rg,

Please find my response below.

1. I declared the check when i entered US border. They checked on the back of the check and since it was not signed, they were ok with it.
2. I mentioned that i am just doing my landing now and would relocate after i get my transfer order from my current company and he was fine with it and just asked me who i work for.
3. I recently received my PR cards also to the address i had mentioned there.

Hope it helps.

Thanks,
-KK
