Submitting Work Permit and Study Permit

Hello,

I am currently in the process of applying for my study permit. I was accepted into UBC for a Master's in Archival Studies, and my common-law spouse will be attending with me.

He intends to get an open work permit, however the processing times are currently 3 months for the work permit vs. 4 weeks for the study permit. If we submit both together, will the study permit be delayed as well? I start school in September, so 3 months would probably be cutting it too close. If we submit the work permit separately, will this affect what my spouse should write in his "Purpose of Travel" document? His main purpose would be to come and (emotionally, I guess) support me, but he would also search for work after he receives his work permit.

Also, if he lacks the work permit, would we potentially need to show more Proof of Funds? My main proof of funds will be student loans.

Thanks for the help and taking the time to read this!

I though supporting your common law partner only works if you have Permanent Residency or citizenship. Just 'cause you're attending school 2 years is probably not enough for him to be eligible in the first place. (maybe I am wrong, but look into this first, just to be sure)
Secondly, in my honest opinion, IF he is eligible, he can wait. school cannot as it starts in September (I guess you got ok for fall term?) In that case apply on your own and bring him later. Money comes from the same pool. When you prove it doesn't matter. There still needs to be money there. You can't apply on 0$ so one of you has to show some proof of funds even if you apply together or separate.
Again this is just my opinion but re-check what I said first to make sure he can join you
