Hi guys,

my partner just got the landing information for our commonlaw outland PR app
they asked to submit her passport, since shes a korean national, does she need to submit her original passport or just copies?

I checked the CIC site: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas-result.asp?country=KR&result=2&message=0&standard=2&q3=
and it says she needs at ETA, so I am assuming she only needs to send COPIES?

Thanks a lot, our journey is almost over, we really appreciate this forum's help and support during our application process.

Original passport, it's for them to actually give her the visa for landing.

visa exempt applicants do NOT submit their original passport, they submit photocopies.

carefully re-read the passport request letter. there is usually language about submitting photocopies vs. the passport i believe. feel free to post the letter here without her personal information. if she is visa exempt, she should be ok with submitting a copy of her passport, as she does not require a visa counterfoil stamp in her passport. i realize things have changed recently, but this shouldn't have changed. is there a thread for Korean applicants you can confirm in? I would not recommend sending the physical passport until other current korean applicants confirms it is needed now.

I believe the ETA is applied for separately by the applicant prior to traveling.

Hi there, thanks for the quick reply, i have also cross posted this to the korean sponsorship thread.

yes, south korea is visa exempt (as far as what: www.cic.gc.ca/ENGLISH/visit/visas.asp says, Koreans only need ETA), here is the quote from the letter:

STEP 2: PASSPORT REQUIREMENTS – Determine if you need to submit your passport(s)
 Determine whether you require a visa to enter Canada at www.cic.gc.ca/ENGLISH/visit/visas.asp
 Please note that if you or your accompanying family members are permanent residents of the U.S.A and a
holder of a passport which requires a visa to enter Canada, you are still required to submit your passport(s).
If you require a visa to enter Canada, then submit your passport(s):
 Please provide your passport or travel document and a passport or travel document for each accompanying
family member. An accompanying family member must have his or her own passport or travel document.
 There must be at least two blank pages in your passport(s).
 Please note that permanent resident visas cannot be placed in Diplomatic, Official or Military passports or
travel documents.
 All passports must be intact and not worn, torn or otherwise damaged; the laminate on the bio-data page
must be securely attached. Each page must be securely affixed to the passport; there cannot be any loose
pages.
 Ensure that your passport is valid for at least 12 months from the date of this letter.
If you do not require a visa to enter Canada:
 Please submit one photocopy of the photo page and any pages containing amendments of the passport for
you and one for each accompanying family member.
 Ensure that your passport is valid for at least 12 months from the date of this letter.
 Please note that you cannot use a Diplomatic, Official or Military passport to travel to Canada to become a
permanent resident of Canada. You must be in possession of an ordinary passport.
 IMPORTANT: If you are currently residing in Canada and you intend to travel by air to another country
before becoming a permanent resident, you will be required to apply and obtain an eTA prior to boarding
your flight back to Canada. Here’s how: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta.asp.

so i guess its most likely only a copy is needed,
but if any korean national has had experience with this recently, please advise :) thanks

per the instructions in red, since she doesn't need a visa, all she needs to do is submit a copy. no need to confirm with others. it's written right there!
