Hey, I am still waiting for citizenship since applying in April 2015 and no one from Citizenship Immigration Canada (CIC) can give me any information. Any advice?

- Submitted Citizenship application April 2015
- Jan 16 2016 received letter from CIC, "Notice to appear to write citizenship test and verify documents on Feb 4 2016"
- Feb 4 2016 I met with CIC in Scarborough. I did not write the test as I am over 55. The immigration office verified my documents and told me within 2 weeks I should receive a letter from CIC to appear for oath
- Since then, no letter and no communication from CIC in 2 years

I have called CIC multiple times, my local MP has called always the same answer, no update waiting on background checks

I asked a lawyer to write a letter 2 months ago and she also said there is no answer

Does anyone know why this is happening or what I can do?

Please Help!!! :(

This is what I see on CIC website. Did they forget about me or lose my file?
  1. We received your application for Canadian citizenship (grant of citizenship) on April 13, 2015.
  2. We sent you correspondence acknowledging receipt of your application(s) on April 27, 2015.
  3. We started processing your application on July 27, 2015.
  4. We sent you a notice on January 15, 2016 to appear and write the citizenship test on February 4, 2016 at 8:15 AM. The notice you will receive by mail will be your official confirmation of your appointment. If you have not received this notice prior to the date of your scheduled appointment, please contact us.

Your lawyer is a far better source than anyone in a forum like this.

Responses for questions about how and why and what to anticipate and so on depend on the particular facts and circumstances in your case. The range of issues is huge.

If you have been issued RQ and responded to RQ, it could be you are in a full-blown residency case and those can indeed take a long time.

If you have not received RQ, and hints there is an overseas background, security matter looming. How those affect an individual case is very difficult to know.

You and your lawyer should have a good idea whether there is a serious security question potentially looming for you. You know the facts of your life after all.

If there really is no reason to think Canada should have any significant security concerns for you, and there is NO RQ, talk to your lawyer about when it would be time to demand a decision, and then pursue a Writ of Mandamus if IRCC does not take action.

Thank you for the advice. I have not been issued an RQ. If there are any security concerns, wouldn’t they normally notify the applicant or ask them to come in for another interview?

I read the list of what would qualify an application as non-routine on CICs website and I don’t fall under any category.

There has been 0 communication from CIC since my notice to appear for citizenship and verify documents in Feb 2016. When I inquire, they say that background checks still ongoing.

My local MPs office said that CIC outsources background checks to a 3rd party and that 3rd party doesn’t provide any time frames for background checks.

CIC has timelines for everything on their website, albeit some of the timelines are wide (I.e. up to 36 months) but in my case I don’t know if it’s 36 months or 100 months, no one can give me any info.

I just hope my application didn’t fall through the cracks and is now forgotten. I have no choice but to continue the process with my lawyer and patiently search for answers.

Has anyone had a similar situation?
