Study visa extension

I reside in British Columbia and my study permit is valid until April 2022. I am doing doing 2 years course which started in May 2021 and though my course is valid until April 2023 I do not know the reason why I was given one year study permit so I need to apply for an extension so that I can stay in Canada. How soon can I apply for an extension. I heard it is 2 months before the expiry and ircc website only mentions about applying it 30 days before the expiry date but I did not want to take the chance of getting it delayed due to covid. Is there a possibility of me applying in December 2021 which would be almost 5 months before the study permit get expired. Or do I have to wait for a few more months and apply.

You apply 2 months before expiry as there is no point applying now. As for why, you were only given a year…it is at the discretion of CBSA/IRCC. They want to see that you are progressing in your studies and maintaining full time status for your program.

I applied for an extension at the start of August and still haven't received it, after 120 days, while the IRCC says processing times are 57 days.
Make of that what you will.

Oh.. I got to know yesterday about a fellow student who applied in July 2021 for her study permit extension and her permit was expiring on 31st Dec 2021. She got it approved last week.. so it really doesn't matter how early we apply I guess as the processing times are too much now a days

I wasn't given +90 days on my study permit. So it's ending on Dec 31, 2021 while it should have been till April 30, 2022. I've applied for an extension but no update yet. Has anyone got an extension yet? I applied on Nov 12th.
