Good Day Everyone,

First, thank you all for your kindness and for trying to help others.

I would like to have your insights into my situation.

  • I have a pending permanent residence application since March 2020 (me, my wife, and our minor child)
  • I am now enrolled in a one-year program at a Designated learning institution (DLI) and received my student visa recently. My wife and son didn’t apply for a visa and are staying in our home country.

From what I have read and understood is that I can apply for PGWP or an Open work permit after graduation. Then, before my PGWP expires, I will have to apply for a Bridging open work permit (BOWP).

My question is how/when could I bring my wife and son to live with me in Canada?

Should I apply for their open work permit (wife) and study permit (son) at the same time when applying for the PGWP/Open work permit? Or after I get the PGWP?

I am confused and any help would be very much appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

Hello Grownup,

If you get your study permit approved, you can decide to apply for your family almost immediately, upon arriving in Canada, or after the end of your first semester of study.

If you want your family to be with you early, you don't have to wait 'till post-graduation to apply for them. Your minor child can come to Canada with a visitor visa or study permit and your spouse can file for SOWP or visitor visa. As you already know, there is no guarantee that they will be approved.

Regards,

JS
