Hi all,

I'm planning to do a 1-year postgraduate certificate in Canada. My sponsor has already paid for my full tuition and GIC.

I have been working for 1.5 years full time and I have invested most of my savings into the stock market. As of today, I have already sold all my shares and the cash (some CAD 20k) is now in my investment account with my broker. I do not intend to buy shares again until I have completed my studies in Canada.

I have a few questions regarding using this as my proof of funds:
  • Should I transfer the cash back to my savings account to show that the money is readily available?
  • What supporting documents do I need to submit with my application to show that the money is legitimate and has been under my name for the whole time?
  • Would the visa officer red flag this if I sold my shares at a 20% loss?
Many thanks!

If you have already sold the equity then transfer the money to your savings account, as it becomes readily accessible. Since you have been working the money is presumably yours, if that is true then no further proof should be needed as you must be submitting your pay letter etc and the money invested must be commensurate with your income.
Why did you sell your portfolio at such a big loss if your expenses in Canada is already paid for? Ircc does not care about your investment acumen or lack of it

Hi orwell,

Thanks a lot for the response. Yes, that money came from my income and savings.

I'm thinking of submitting these documents as proof of funds:
  • My savings account statements for the last 4 months showing salary and the me wiring the money from my investment account
  • My investment account statements for the last 4 months (not sure if this is necessary?)
  • A letter from my sponsor (my sister) saying that she had paid for my tuition and GIC
  • Tuition and GIC receipt
Would that be sufficient? Many thanks!
