Hi guys, my study permit has just been extended and I want to share some information in case anyone here might find them useful.

My application was "in-Canada" and was submitted online on July 14. I got a notification acknowledging receipt of the application and nothing else until August 13 when I received another notification saying my application has been approved and that I should expect my study permit in the mail soon.

Documents uploaded online in respect of my application:
1. Application to Change Conditions, Extend my Stay or Remain in Canada as a Student (IMM5709)
2. Proof of Means of Financial Support (Scholarship & funding letters of $25000 + bank statement showing savings of about $ 5000)
3. Scanned data page of new passport + all pages of old passport containing previous visas to Canada and other countries
4. Letters of enrollment from the registrar, faculty and department + admission letter (four different letters in total)
5. Letter of explanation
6. Marriage certificate - since I also combined this application with an additional application for a TRV for my wife who is not in Canada at the moment. Apparently, CIC processes applications like ours separately. I wouldn't know if my wife's TRV will be processed here in Canada or if her file will be transferred to her country of current residence and treated by the embassy staff there.

All in all, one hurdle crossed. We're thankful.

Congratulations! I have some questions:
1. What visa did you have before the extension of the status? Short-term or long-term?
2. I want to go to Quebec for 3-month language course. Is it possible to extend my student permit if I get enrolled in some other long-term course.
How long does it take usually?
3. Is 5000 CAD a sufficient amount to show on your bill for a year of studies?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sorry for my late reply, @michel_hammamet.
1. Study permit + Temporary Resident Visa
2. I am not sure. However, you can find more information here: "wwwDOTimmigration-quebecDOTgouvDOTqcDOTca/en/french-language/learning-quebec/indexDOThtml" , here "wwwDOTlanguagescanadaDOTca/en" and here: "wwwDOTcicDOTgcDOTca/english/study/study-whoDOTasp" . Usually, you do not need a study permit if you plan to take a course or program in Canada that lasts six months or less. If you would like to get a study permit and then extend it later, maybe you should apply for a long term course.
3. I would say no. You would need to show that you have your tuition fees + $10,000 per annum "wwwDOTcicDOTgcDOTca/english/study/study-how-documentsDOTasp#doc3"

is payment of full tuition fee a must?
I don't think so but you need to show compelling proof that you are able to pay your fees and meet your maintenance costs without taking up a job while studying in Canada.

I am not able to "share" the letter of explanation or send it to your e-mail but kindly find below the information I provided in my letter:
1. That I will be financially responsible for my wife's travel, feeding, accommodation and health insurance costs during her visit
2. Her expected date of arrival and departure
3. My contact telephone and e-mail address
4. The need/desire for her to visit me soon since we had virtually no honeymoon

For my wife's visitor's visa, apart from the usual application forms and passport, we provided:
1. Signed invitation letter from me formally inviting her to Canada. The letter stated her date of birth, full name, expected date of arrival and departure, my contact telephone number and e-mail address, and a firm undertaking that I would foot her travel bills.
2. Separate letters of explanation by both of us stating virtually the same thing (please see above)
3. Letter from her employer stating that she is welcome to resume duties after her visit
4. Letter from the company where she is a director detailing her involvement in the running of the company.
5. Financial support documents showing evidence of about $29,500 for two of us. ($4000 is needed for a visit/stay of 12 months but no harm in providing that amount for a visit of 3 weeks, right? :) Evidence of the other $25,500 included in the application was intended for my living expenses and tuition)

It's been about 6 weeks since the study permit & visitor's visa applications were submitted (as a single application). I have received my study permit but we are yet to receive any update regarding the processing of her TRV. We don't know if it's being processed in Canada (she's outside Canada at the moment) or in the country where she currently resides. In any case, we are still within the average processing times posted online for both probable processing locations. Fingers crossed.
