Study permit/PGWP confusion

Hello guys,

I am right now outside Canada, I had been living there pursuing my Masters since September 2018 and left Canada when everything was moved online in March. I've been looking to go back since then but have not been able to because of travel restrictions. My studies were just completed on August 15th and I'll receive my degree by mid-September.

My study permit is valid till November 30th of this year. I wanted to go back and start looking for a job but I am confused about my status
1) Is my study permit valid to ensure my entry to Canada? or,
2) Should I apply for PGWP first, wait for it to approve and then go back?

For reference I do have an apartment there with a lease under my name.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks :)

1. You can seek entry to Canada if your study permit (and TRV) are valid but your travel is likely non-essential and you would not be allowed to come in.
2. Probably.

I think you will allowed in since you have a valid permit and a current lease here hence you’re a resident.

Even if your study permit is not valid your TRV should be valid till Nov 2020. And in your case it is valid so you can go to Canada. Also, your degree is not completed officially completed now so you are still student until you get your completion letter from the university. I know a student whose study permit was issued before 18 March 2020 and he came to Canada yesterday with the quarantine plan of 14 days.

It expires 90 days after program completion. However, if you can't show you have in-person classes (which of course you do not) you may not be allowed to enter.

This is also something I'm not sure about. Won't my study permit be considered expired if I'm no longer a student?
That is what I am telling you,
First of all when you get your completion letter from the university you would have 180 days to apply for your work permit. But you cannot work until you apply your work permit but your status remain in Canada (student or visitor whatever your say).
Secondly, lets say even if your study permit expires but you have valid TRV so by law you can come and go even your studies is ended 6 months ago.

May be you can ask your university or college to issue you a letter which says that he has to be here to attend the classes physically (if you are registered for the next semester) because technically you are not graduated now.

What if I could show that I have a job lined up once the 14 day quarantine period is over. Would that be considered a valid reason to enter?

She got in. She took two additional classes in college for 1 month each. In Canada border the most meaningful thing she had was valid job offer and graduation letter from college, without them they wouldn't let her in.
P.s Yeah, seems like it's not "exact same" situation, sorry about that
