Hi everyone,

I hold a Study and Work Permit in Canada due to my program including a co-op component. Both permits expire on August 19th, and my current program ends on July 19th. I’ve been accepted to a new school for the fall term, paid my tuition fees, and applied for a study permit extension on June 19th. I have a trip planned to my home country in early July, returning at the end of the month.

My current school informed me that they won’t be able to issue my Completion Letter before I return due to logistical reasons. I’ve also secured a job at a reputable company in Canada, and I don’t want to jeopardize it. According to the IRCC website (https://ircc.canada.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=1308&top=15), “If your study permit is still valid, or we extended your permit while you were away, we may let you enter as a student.”

My question is, will I be able to return to Canada without any issues? What are the chances of facing problems at the border? Is there a possibility that the immigration officer might refuse my entry as a student, thus preventing me from working until my new permit is approved, given that my current school will have finished while I’m away?

Thanks for any advice or experiences you can share.

Do you have a valid TRV or ETA to re-enter? Your study permit expires 90 days after program completion. When did you finish your program? Also in your link, it says you enter as a student if extension was approved while you were out of the country. All depends on when you finished program.

I read this. And my Student visa in my passport is valid until August 19th 2024. But I'm afraid of the Immigration officer don't let me get in as a student if my school is done, even though I don't have a completion letter yet. That's my concern.
Do you have a valid TRV (not student visa) or ETA to re-enter? Your original permit expires 90 days after program completion so when did you finish program. You have applied for extension, so if you applied for extension without letter or completion, not approved and study permit expired then CBSA can enter let you enter as a visitor. If visitor you follow instructions in the link. Will they let you enter as a student…you will only know upon re-entry.
