I am planning on sending my documents through an agent for study permit in sep 2013, SPP program, thou i have read online that if you have been rejected before you cannot apply, i was rejected thrice earlier, 2007 was the 1st time which was visit visa for my brothers convocation, 2nd time a study permit, and 3rd a visit again last year, with reasons being they are not sure if i would return to country of origin, since i applied from the gulf, now i am back in India, and i really want to persue my studys further in a PG program related to my work experience, so i wanna give this my last shot from India. Ive been told my minus points are-
1. I have a brother in canada
2. Rejected thrice
3. 10 year gap between my last BA studies which i completed 2003, thou i have worked in this gap.

What do think are my chances? :-[ :-[ is there any hope if i apply through general study visa? any hope at all.

Hi,

As far as applying for a Canadian study permit under SPP, is concerned... you are NOT eligible because, RULE IS: those who have been previously rejected for a Study permit, are not eligible to apply for study permit under SPP. I can't say how this rule will apply on you, since your study permit has been already rejected once, while you were in Gulf... and not in India. However, to the best of my knowledge... you are not eligible to apply under SPP. And to be on safer side... your best shot would be to apply under Generic category.

Here's the generic category checklist: http://www.vfs-canada.co.in/pdf/study_permit_20-09-2012.pdf

As for getting the Canadian Study Permit: Having a sibling in Canada, should in no way affect the decision of you getting a study permit or not, as the decision on your Canadian study permit will completely be based on the individual application package. Usually good academic record ( especially marks of last major degree) , proper course selection (preferably showing progression in same field) consistent profile (relevant work ex), sufficient proof of funding and a decent IELTS score is seen as a standard benchmark to get the Canadian study permit. There may be more requirements, depending upon the citizenship of one's country.

Hope it helps.

Thank you so much for your quick reply, it was very helpful.
Few more questions for you.

1. Apply for a post degree 2 yr program would hold more weight than a 1 year course in Canada, is that true since my case is not very good.
2. Have you heard of people in the same situation after 3 to 4 rejections still getting the study permit?

Hi,

1. Completing a 2 acd. year /4 semester/ min. 16 months of actual studies will make you eligible for a 3 years PGWP. This will give you plenty of time to pursue skilled job... immigration.

2. There have been cases, who have got Canadian study permit even after two previous rejections. It really depends on your overall application package... like I mentioned above.

As for general Business PG diplomas./certificates/ post degree diplomas... offered in most Ontario colleges (and few in other provinces like B.C) is a different story. Please go through this previous post of mine, on pursuing these PG certificate/diploma courses in Canadian colleges. Remember it's my personal opinion and not a standard rule.

Hi,

Honestly it means... that most Canadians either pursue lower level trade certificates/diplomas OR practical career oriented diplomas in recognized Canadian colleges or directly pursue Bachelors or higher education in universities. rarely...do Canadians actually pursue these PG certificate course in Canadian colleges (especially these Ontario colleges and some other like the B.C colleges of NIC & Northern lights where they have recently started post degree diplomas in Business to attract international students) which are run keeping international students in mind. There are very few PG certificate/diploma colleges programs..which Canadians actually pursue. This trend started, when colleges found international students, are either overqualified for practical trades/diploma programs or underqualified for Master degrees/ higher education in good public universities..and thus to fill the gap, most probably such college programs started. These programs are heavily promoted by the educational consultants/agents in countries like India, where they get a lump-sum commission to send every student to these kind of PG programs. That being said... there is no set rule either, that an international student is bound to fail/i.e not get skilled professional job after these PG certificates/diplomas (although there r few programs which are quiet good).. .as in really, at the end...it all depends on individual capabilities and circumstances, skills, academic performance, networking abilities & communication skills etc... it's just that... pursuing trades/ practical diplomas/Master's (from good public universities) increases the odds of getting a skilled job substantially....

Only a 3 years PGWP, gives you TIME... i.e extra time to pursue immigration... nothing else. 3 years PGWP doesn't mean guaranteed PR. If tomorrow rules change or easy immigration policies like that of Saskatchewan shut down, majority of desi students who pursue these kind of quick entry PG certificate programs (especially business field programs) will be in limbo, when they will either have to find a skilled job or pay huge sums to not so trustworthy agents, in hope they help them get skilled jobs that may assist in overall immigration process. I'm sorry to be brutally honest..but even though today we have easier immigration polices such as those of Sask. and Manitoba PNPs, there's no guarantee these will not shut down tomorrow, and if that happens.. finding a skilled job will be the only way to immigrate. Reality is... even having a practical skilled trade/diploma from colleges or Master's from universities gives no guarantee of a good professional job, and finding a skilled job and getting PR is not a cakewalk like most desis seem to have that false sense of hope/ idea... especially if they rely ONLY on these PG certificates of colleges. As truth is, even native born Canadians often struggle face fierce competition to find those "skilled" jobs.
And for moving to PHd you need valid Master's degree from a Canadian public university.. not one of these PG cert./diplomas.

Others may agree or oppose with my views, and are welcome to discuss/debate.

Hope it's clear.

Thankyou again for your reply, it was very insightful.
But does applying for a 2 yr PG program in my case it would be Global Business Management, instead of 1 yr PG make them realize that im a serious student and make my chances of obtaining a study permit little easier?

Dear Avril

Applying for longer duration does not satisfy the officer that your intention of studies are genuine. Which part of gulf did you apply from. I am also in the process of applying from Gulf but was confused whether to apply from India under SPP or apply to Abu Dhabi embassy.
Tiger appreciate your inputs ....

Regards
Ron

Hi,

If that is what your agent says... the best is to not rely on any one's word... but rather ask the Canadian High commission directly.

Here's the contact details of CHC, New Delhi: http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/india-inde/offices-bureaux/new_delhi.aspx

Call them/ email them immediately ,and inquire about this query : Whether applicants previously rejected under the Generic category Study Permit, are eligible to apply under SPP or not?

You will get the answer, as per current updated rules.

Then, please share the current updated rule, for the benefit of other members.
