I applied for study permit extension on October 29th. Then in December I realized that instead of Confirmation of Enrollment I accidently uploaded letter of Future registration. After contacting my school I had followed their advice and uploaded Confirmation of Enrollment on December 12th. On December 22nd I got a confirmation that my document had been added to my file and was ready for the review of the immigration officer. In the mean time I left Canada, as my passport was expiring in October 2023, so I wanted to use this time gap to get a new passport in my home country. As I left, I lost my implied status, so I wasn't able to start school in January. Then, on March 3rd I received the same email from IRCC that my document was added to my file and is ready for the review. I am so confused, not sure what the problem is. Did adding the document delay the processing of my application and it in fact started on December 22nd? If so, it has already been 86 days and I still have no answer.

Now I am hoping to start it in Spring term in April, but my application has not even been touched. It's 2 weeks from now, I am outside of Canada ready to buy my tickets, but I am still waiting for approval. My w school issued new Confirmation of Enrollment for me, with new dates.

I am about to contact IRCC through the web form and attach new letter from school, but I am concerned it will again delay the processing time.

Why do you think it is taking so long? Anyone else waiting for over 140 days? I would like to add that I am from a visa free country and study permit extension feels like a formality, but I cant really start my program until I get a formal approval. Thank you very much for any help and ideas what could be wrong

So you were in Canada, when you applied for extension?

My study permit was valid until November 30th 2022 and I started my application in the middle of October. The last thing missing was my acceptance letter from school, which I had to wait due to the registration for courses date. I flew out of Canada on October 27th and filed my extension on October 29th right after I arrived back to Europe. I applied while still on my valid study permit.

But you cannot apply for a study permit extension outside of Canada. You must be in Canada. So if you were not in Canada, you were not eligible. That is why it may be taking so long.

I am so confused. Where does it say on the immigration website you can't apply if your are traveling outside of the country and apply for extension in the meantime? Noone ever told me that. I didn't receive any message from the immigration officer regarding the approval. What is the best thing to do now? Contact IRCC through the web form hoping they will agree for me to start school? Is there any hope?

The whole point of an extension is to study and remain IN Canada. An extension is just that to remain in Canada and study. You need to read all the requirements. You should have applied for extension before you left Canada (there are links and Q&As for this). You may be asked to apply for a new study permit because you were not in Canada. So if refused, you apply for a new study permit. If online, you can study outside Canada without a permit. May not be eligible for PGWP but need to check that and if you need a study permit.

You have ETA so can return to Canada but you cannot start studies in Canada without a study permit.

Well, the point of leaving was my expiring passport. I had to get a new one. I applied for extension with January start date of the program and I was intending to come back.

The first term of my school is online. If I come back to Canada in April, can I apply for a new study permit from inside Canada as a visitor ?

Is there any chance the immigration officer will make an exception, because I needed to leave and gets my study permit extension approved?

What if I left Canada 1 days after applying for extension? Would my situation be different?

Thank you kindly for your answers.

Again, while reading study permit extension it does not state you need to be physically present in Canada to extend your study permit. Otherwise I would have never left.

Best regards

You can apply from inside Canada, but I think it will processed outland since your study permit has expired. You cannot study until approved.

If you had just applied for the extension within Canada, even the day before, you would be okay. You cannot apply for an extension outside Canada, even by a day. You need to understand what "extension" means. It is for those IN Canada because you need to extend your permit to continue to study IN Canada. The whole point of the extension is to allow you to continue your studies while in Canada. Again you may get lucky but given your current timelines, IRCC is probably checking to see if you meet extension requirements. Your permit expired over 90 days ago so you will need a new study permit if extension is refused (which is likely because you applied outside Canada).

I HAVE APPLIED FOR MY STUDY PERMIT EXTENSION ON FEBURARY 3RD 2023 AND I AM STILL WAITING FOR MY APPROVAL, MY CURRENT STATUS HAS BEEN EXPIRED ON APRIL 30TH. WHAT TO DO? I ALREADY TRIED MULTIPLE TIME CALLING TO IRCC BUT NO RESPONSE.
