Study permit Extension Rejected. HELP

My study permit was rejected today with the following reason

"YOUR STUDY PERMIT HAS NOW EXPIRED THEREFORE YOU MUST SUBMIT A NEW STUDY PERMIT APPLICATION ONCE SUBMITTED PLEASE INFORM US"

I applied on January 28th and my permit expired on March 14th while I had already applied for an extension. Why would I need to apply for a study permit if I am already a full time student? That does not make any sense. Please explain? and how to appeal

Also, according to the website the permit should be reapplied for before 30 days?

Extension was from outside Canada can somebody please let me know what this means? It doesn't make any sense to me.
