  1. So I made a mistake I think. I accepted employment off campus and I have a work permit for my co-op and i have my study permit and my SIN, however I just noticed that I do not have the conditions on my study permit that state I can or cannot work off campus as an international student, and I just noticed my work permit said i cannot accept employment outside of the listed employer which is my university. I am freaking out and I dont want to get in trouble with the government. I called the number 800 622-6232 and asked the lady if I would be in trouble, but she said no that since my study permit was issued after 2014 i should be allowed to take employment outside of university, but I am still freaking out and I dont know if I should terminate my employment or if I should contact the government. I am applying to extend my study permit and I dont want to get into trouble for this. It is really effecting my mental health as the thought of getting in trouble is causing me to have suicidal thoughts since I do not want to have to break any bad news to my family. PLEASE HELP
I also want to add that during this time I have always maintained full time status as a student. Never exceeded 20hours of work. And I am apllying to get my study permit extended for a year as i fix co-op which extended my degree (my current employer is same as my co-op employer ). I dont want this to cause problems for my study permit extension, i am more than willing to leave canada after graduation but I want to complete my education. Please someone out there give me input/advice/guidance. I really dont want to resort to dishonesty on my application and intentionally leave out my part time employment.

"Who can’t work off campus
You can’t work off campus without a work permit if any of these situations apply to you:

  • your study permit says you aren’t authorized to work off campus while you study
  • you’re only enrolled in an English or French as a second language (ESL/FSL) program
  • you’re only taking general interest courses
  • you’re only taking courses required to be accepted into a full-time program
  • your situation changes and you no longer meet all of the requirements to work off campus
If any of these situations apply to you, and you want to work while studying in Canada, you need to apply for a work permit.

If your study situation changes
If you weren’t eligible to work off-campus, but your study situation has now changed, you may be able to change the conditions of your study permit.

You can apply to change the conditions of your permit if:

  • you’ve changed your study program to one that may allow you to work off-campus and
  • your study permit says “This permit does not permit the holder to engage in off-campus employment in Canada”
OR

  • we included a condition on your study permit that may no longer apply
Example: You have a study permit to complete prerequisite courses, such as an ESL or FSL course. You’re then accepted into a full-time study program. This would mean you could apply to have the condition (not being allowed to work off campus) removed from your study permit."

First of all, calm down. Reacting emotionally or overreacting will not help you. Take a deep breath and formulate a plan. Certain colleges (usually private) do not allow off campus work. This should be clearly stated on their website as well as the work permit you receive so technically the onus is on the student to make sure they are abiding by this.

However, we all make mistakes. Call the CIC number and explain your situation, ask them to send you an email or any written document highlighting that you made a call and contacted them as soon as you realized your mistake and stopped working illegally as soon as you realized. When applying for your extended study permit, make sure you include this document or email, and explain your situation impeccably. The officers are also human after all and if you appear sincere in your mistake and not intentionally breaking regulation then you can hope they will see past this.
