Study permit extension approved but date is way too short -- officer mistake?

Hi, I'm a PhD student and I've been studying in canada for about 4 years. I recently applied for a study permit extension (on average PhD in my field takes 5 years and 6 months), asking to extend my permit for 1 year (september 2017). It was accepted but my extension date was set to 30 november 2016 (no apparent reason).

Could it be a mistake on the year? For example, a friend of mine that recently applied and got his study permit extended for his requested duration + 3 months.

Did anyone had a similar problem? Is it possible to ask for review of the file or it's necessary to apply again?

In 2022, I don't think it's a passport problem.. Funding is plenty ($32000 savings + 20000 stipend and tuition is paid). And that's my first extension

Did you have documentation from the university showing your program will run another year and a half?

Honestly, even if the officer made a mistake, the easiest thing for you to do is just apply for another extension in October.

This is actually a good point, I have two docs: one is an enrollment letter that says the term ends in Aug 31 2016 (that's because you can't register to a term that hasn't started yet), and another is a letter of employment where school says my expected completion date is Aug 31 2018 that was maybe overlooked..

I inquired CIC to ask if they can give me a reason so that at least I can emphasize this aspect and not run into this issue next time... let's see what they write back

@canuck_in_uk thanks so much for the advice, I think that's the best course of action as well

You can request your GCMS notes to see what the officer's reasoning was.

An update that can be useful for people in the same situation:

As I said, I wrote them immediately (using the enquiry form) politely asking the reason for such a short extension. What happened is that the message was re-directed to the visa office and then the office automatically issued a new study permit with the correct date! ;D

congrats! Good to hear about your extension.
I am on the same boat.I applied for study permit extension and restoration and it got approved.I asked for extension till April 2019,which is my expected graduation date, but it was approved for only 6 months,April 2017.
Can you please tell me who should I talk to regarding the expected graduation letter? Is it Enrollment Department OR My Program Chair/Dean?
I would need that letter handy before connecting to CIC.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you very much
