Hi,

I'm an International Student here in Canada, and I have been studying here since August 28 last year. Right before my year long study permit expired, I applied for an extension on May 6th of this year. I received my study permit WHICH ONLY LASTED FOR THREE MONTHS WHICH IS WEIRD, at around May 26th with a Remark/Observations: MUST UNDERGO IMMIGRATION MEDICAL EXAMINATION WITHIN 30 DAYS, which I did a week after. Thinking Canadian Immigration will send me a year long copy, I just waited. Now My temporary Permit expired about a month and a half ago. I still have no idea whether the Immigration will send my new Study Permit. Should I apply for a new one or will the Immigration send me an updated one (year long study permit) Comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated THANK YOU SO MUCH.

I don't think CIC is going to send you a new work permit. You will need to apply for a new one. You'll also need to apply for restoration since you are currently out of status in Canada since your work permit expired over a month ago. Note that you have 90 days from the time your status expired to apply for restoration and fix your status from within Canada.

You shouldn't be engaging in studying or working until you have a valid study permit again.

I was wondering CIC only sent me a 3 month study permit knowing that I have a whole school year ahead of me? Is this how the Extension of Study Permits usually work? By 3 month basis?

It's weird. I've extended my study permit in April. I attached a letter from my university to prove I am still a student. The letter also has the end date of my school. One month later, CIC sent me my renewed study permit that extends almost 3 years, although I mentioned that I will be finishing my degree within 2 years.
Something wrong with your application, I believe.
Have you ever called CIC to figure out what's wrong when you received your 3-month study permit?

Unfortunately I have not called CIC. What do you think is the best course of action right now? I am literally a lost and confused 18 year old right now.

They won't issue you another study permit unless you apply for a new one. In you case, since your study permit is expired, you should apply for restoration. You may need to provide an explanation letter to explain your situation. I suggest you apply for it ASAP as your study permit has been expiring for 1.5 months.

Did you provide a letter from your school to prove you still have one more year course? Your proof of financial support is also very important. You must prove you have enough money to support your school and your life here. Based on the CIC website, you need at least 10000 CAD for a year.

Good luck!

I just submitted my application for the Restoration of my status. How long will it usually take and can I stay here in Canada while they are processing my application? (especially after Dec 29, 2016 (end of my 90 day grace period))

Yes - you can stay while the restoration application is being processed. However since you're out of status, you can't work or attend school.

It's difficult to say how long processing will take. We see everything from a few week to four months on this forum.

Can't work or attend school? That's going to be extremely difficult. Are there any exemptions? Thank you so much for responding by the way. Hopefully I can get it as soon as possible.

No exemptions. You're out of status in Canada right now.
