https://www.caipsgcms.com/Hey all,

I applied for my study permit initially on Oct 19th, 2018 and got refused on December 11th, 2018. I was admitted to the Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration at Concordia University.

I live in Kuwait and I am an Indian citizen by the way.

These were the reasons highlighted in the refusal letter.

You have not satisfied me that you would leave Canada at the end of your stay. In reaching this decision, I considered several factors, including:
  • family ties in Canada and in country of residence
  • purpose of visit
  • employment prospects in country of residence
  • personal assets and financial status.
I was startled that I got my student visa denied since I've never heard of anyone getting denied in the past.

In my initial application, my parents were the primary sponsors of my education, so I submitted:
  • Father's salary certificate
  • Father's Bank Statements
  • Father's Sponsorship Letter
I did not submit my employment letter, an SOP or my personal bank statements.

I ordered the CAIPS/GCMS notes and this was what was noted down by the visa officer:

“I have reviewed the application. Taking the applicant’s plan of studies into account, the applicant does not appear to be sufficiently well established that the proposed studies would be a reasonable expense.GivenfamilytiesoreconomicmotivestoremaininCanada, the applicant's incentives to remain in Canada may outweigh their ties to their home country. The applicant’s plan of studies appears vague and poorly documented. According to the applicant’s current or future employment prospects, I have accorded less weight to their employment ties to their country of residence. Weighing the factors in this application, I am not satisfied that the applicant will depart Canada at the end of the period authorized for their stay. For the reason above, I have refused this application.”

------------------------------------

I reapplied to the same program of study at the same university for the next term and received admission once again and applied for my study permit for the second time. This time I submitted:
  • A letter of explanation citing the GCMS notes and made an appeal to each point
  • A statement of purpose/study plan on how this program will benefit my future employment prospects in Kuwait
  • A letter from my current employer saying that they have no objection in me pursuing my graduate studies and I can still work for them once I complete (along with the salary and dates of employment)
  • My personal bank statement
  • My father's bank statement (still my primary sponsor)
  • My mother's bank statement
  • My personal bank statement
  • My parent's financial affidavit with properties they own in India
  • My financial affidavit with a property I own in India

And finally, I got my study permit approved!

If you're on the same boat and you're applying for a study permit for the second time after a refusal, here are my pro tips:
  1. Get your CAIPS/GCMS notes from => https://www.caipsgcms.com/
  2. Study the visa officer's notes and see what actually caused the refusal
  3. Prepare a letter of explanation highlighting the GCMS/CAIPS notes and appeal to every point they made and provide reasoning to why you should be reconsidered
  4. Provide a strong statement of purpose/study plan - highlight how this will benefit your future employment prospects in your country of residence/citizenship
Just provide every single documentation you can. The more, the better. Any document you can secure that will make your application stronger, include it and you'll be fine. There's nothing to worry - the visa officers and normal human beings and not machines. As long as you make your intentions clear and have concrete documentation, you'll get your study permit - I guarantee it.

And above all, have faith and you'll be fine.

Cheers!
