Study permit and Permanent residency

Hi,

I was a working professional in India. I came to Canada on two years of study permit in June 2019. There were six courses and I have already completed three of them. But now my wife have scored well in IELTS and we can apply for permanent residency. But the whole process will take at least 6-8 months. So, if I can continue my studies after getting my PR then I can save a lot of money as the university fee is one-third for citizens and PR holders.
But ceasing a study for more than 150 days would lead to auto-cancelation of my study permit. I have no problem with going back to India and working there while waiting for my PR. But I am confused.
1. If I voluntarily cancel my study permit and return back to India, then will it affect my PR application?
2. If I will not cancel my study permit and return back to India, then will it create a future problem in PR application or re-entering Canada?

Please suggest something. What should I do?

Hi there

You should contact with you student advisor and get a deferral approved for yourself. You can't defer your program because it will be cheaper to continue once you are permanent resident but you can defer for family emergencies, medical reason or any genuine interest.

Create a timeline in chronological order of all decisions, events and action steps leading up to your gap in studies. Include key dates which would be helpful for the officer to understand your circumstances; for example, the date that you withdrew from courses, received approval for a deferral, left Canada, received medical care, had a family emergency occur, etc. Keep this timeline for your records as they will become handy if you are asked for information from IRCC or need to write a letter of explanation for a future immigration application.
Also if your study permit will expire during that time period. Contact three month ahead of time to plan to renew your study permit.
I hope this help. Thanks

Thanks for your reply. Actually, to be honest, one reason for my lack of interest in the course is that I have not learned anything new in the program. As I was working on the same technology. I thought that course will give me some in-depth knowledge, but so far I have not found it helpful. So, I don't see any benefit in staying here for now as I have limited working rights.
I just want my PR application should not be affected by this decision. Can I state the reason "not finding studies helpful" while canceling my study permit or I supposed to give any medical or personal emergency only?
And if I return back to my country and let auto-expire the permit, is that a good idea?

Hi there

I would not recommend auto cancelling or medical reason as you are planning to apply pr.

I would recommend a way to defer it so that you always have option to come back as student if required.

Thanks
