Study in US with Canadian PR

Hi, everyone
I would like to know if there is any exception of time frame to live in Canada for a student willing to study in US. I heard that in order to be in status one should spend at least 2 years in last 5 years in canada. Its not possible for a student pursuing a phD degree to have such a long time off from school. I hope there is an exception for a student.
