Hey guys, I am currently an international student in canada and I have an off campus work permit which allows me to work maximum 20 hrs at my part time job while I'm in school. I haven't had classes for more than a week now (we still have 2 final exam tho until next week), and I was wondering if anyone know if the 20 hrs rule is just valid for when I'm having classes or also while I'm having exams? Thanks, it's really appreciated :) Have a good day everyone. :)

the rule applies to time when ur college/university officially closes and opens. It does not matter when u have classes or exams. normally u college will be closed during summer/winter breaks those are the dates u should go by.

Can someone work before the semester start? For example class start on May 2016 and I got my study visa earlier (let's say January) and i go to Canada ahead. Can I work based on 20 hours rule?

1. You can't work, that's against law. You can work only when you are enrolled and registered for the courses.
2. Very rare to get visa 5 months in advance.

What J5M said - no, absolutely not. You cannot begin working until your courses start. If you start early, you're working illegally and in violation of your visa - which makes you removable from Canada.

It's not rare when I actually already applied 6 months before (for Jan 2016 class) but CIC hasn't given me any answers yet until now. If they did gave me the visa, it'll be too late to enter the Jan class.

You're right. There are absolutely people who have visas in advance. However this doesn't automatically mean you will be allowed into Canada that early. If you decide to arrive many months before your classes actually start, you'll need to show that you have sufficient additional funds to support yourself before your classes begin (since you're not allowed to work). If you don't have sufficient funds or if the border official feels you are coming early to work illegally or if the official just thinks you are coming too early - then can refuse you entry and tell you to return closer to the start of classes.

So if I decided to come earlier before my study permit, I just to bring more cash and show it to the border officer (?) :-\

Not cash - bank account statement is fine.

But if you come 5 months in advance - that's pretty early. Even if you can demonstrate you have funds, it's possible they may turn you around and tell you to return later (closer to the start of your studies). Or they may let you in without issue. Ultimately it's impossible for any of us to say. Whether you are allowed into Canada or not is up to the official you encounter when you arrive.
