you can renew your passport, almost all countries make a notation on the new one with the number of the old one that is being replaced. I renew mine because my job offer was extended and i didn't want to get the time on the new wp limited because of the expiration of the passport, so my wp shows a different number that my new passport, but the new passport says its replacing anterior passport with the same number of my wp.
Agreed, Jorger (about renewal of the passport) but thats not my point
Old Passport and Old WP - WP will have the old passport number but if your passport is expiring on a particular date, your WP cannot/should not have validity beyond that.
New Passport and Old work permit - You can renew your passport 6 months to 1 year earlier than its actual expiry date. And, then its okay to link your WP to New passport/expired passport but
I am not sure if you can link your new passport to a WP that has an obvious mistake on it - WP should not have been issued beyond the validity of old passport (even you agree to it).
So my question is - when one is aware that this is an obvious mistake, is it worth taking the risk? I can understand if one is not aware of a mistake.
Now, in all probability it is not even a matter of concern but, it is better to clarify it with CIC. Let them know about the situation - then, the ball is in their court. If they do not take any action, at least they were informed about it - by you. But, if tomorrow they discover this oversight and come back to you to inquire why you did not point out the mistake, it will be very difficult to convince them that the oversight from your end was unintentional.
Again, thats just my opinion. When dealing with government agencies, I always a follow a specific pattern - provide them with all the facts, on time - if they choose to act, at least I will have the benefit of correcting the wrong in ample time without causing stress to self. If they choose to ignore, I will have the paper trail to prove that I had informed them and, am not hiding anything.
