Well, looks like I'm in it for the long haul!

I just hope SOMETHING happens before April 2014; my passport will expire by then.

Hi ahm2307, you can renew your passport while the application is in process. It does not make any difference. Just advise them that the passport's been changes and send them a copy of the new passport - and it shall be all okay. I had renewed my passport in June 2013, send them an email and it was all okay.

Now, if your work permit is also expiring at the same time as your passport (which is most probably the case), I would recommend you to renew your passport as early as your passport authorities allow so that you can renew your work permit/ apply for BOWP as soon as permissible.

So here's the thing...

My passport expires April 2014. My WP expires in August 2014. Does that mean that if I renew my passport ASAP, my WP will still be valid to August?

Whaaat? they did a mistake for your fortune! renew your passport and your wp will expire on august 2014, they don't give a wp longer than your passport expiration date!

Yeah, I know! I got lucky, but the question is, will they honor that mistake and allow me to work until August 2014 should I choose to renew my passport now (or am I limited by the April passport expiry).

I am sorry, I have a different opinion to Jorger. I would ask you to clarify with CIC whether this "mistake" will be honoured or not.

First of all, does not your WP have your passport number? Mine did. So if you change your passport, you have already given them an opportunity to say - since this work permit was tied to that particular passport (which has expired), we cannot honour it anymore.

Secondly, why would you want to take a chance. If they have made a mistake and you are aware of it. Their response could be - you were aware of this mistake and you did not confirm it with us. Were you trying to perpetrate a fraud? - I mean why would even risk it? You can get into the legalities and all that stuff but, do you really have the time, energy and the finances to get into a legal battle with CIC? And, if you lose then you would end up with a status that was illegal - an even bigger trouble.

My sincere advice to you - and you may choose to ignore it, if you wish - please do not do anything that could have even a 0.01% chance of blowing up in your face.

Getting the PR is a BIG thing, dont take any chances.

you can renew your passport, almost all countries make a notation on the new one with the number of the old one that is being replaced. I renew mine because my job offer was extended and i didn't want to get the time on the new wp limited because of the expiration of the passport, so my wp shows a different number that my new passport, but the new passport says its replacing anterior passport with the same number of my wp.

Agreed, Jorger (about renewal of the passport) but thats not my point

Old Passport and Old WP - WP will have the old passport number but if your passport is expiring on a particular date, your WP cannot/should not have validity beyond that.

New Passport and Old work permit - You can renew your passport 6 months to 1 year earlier than its actual expiry date. And, then its okay to link your WP to New passport/expired passport but I am not sure if you can link your new passport to a WP that has an obvious mistake on it - WP should not have been issued beyond the validity of old passport (even you agree to it).

So my question is - when one is aware that this is an obvious mistake, is it worth taking the risk? I can understand if one is not aware of a mistake.

Now, in all probability it is not even a matter of concern but, it is better to clarify it with CIC. Let them know about the situation - then, the ball is in their court. If they do not take any action, at least they were informed about it - by you. But, if tomorrow they discover this oversight and come back to you to inquire why you did not point out the mistake, it will be very difficult to convince them that the oversight from your end was unintentional.

Again, thats just my opinion. When dealing with government agencies, I always a follow a specific pattern - provide them with all the facts, on time - if they choose to act, at least I will have the benefit of correcting the wrong in ample time without causing stress to self. If they choose to ignore, I will have the paper trail to prove that I had informed them and, am not hiding anything.

I will renew the passport first and after that maybe talk with them, you are going to need a valid passport anyway all the way long trough the pr process. worst case scenario they will cancel wp, best case scenario they allow to continue without a new work permit application, absolutely nothing to lose, enjoy your fortune!

Yeah so I'll ring them up in December-ish and clarify the matter with them (if the PR thing doesn't come through by then, which by the looks of it, it won't).
