Steps to apply for a work permit as a post doc in canada

Dear all,

I want to know what are the basic steps to apply for a work permit as a post doc in canada. I am in pakistan right now. I have a wife and three kids they need to travel with me. I got a post doc at the University of Calgary. Will I apply for a open work permit for my wife or some other permit as she doesn't have to work over there so which permit is the easiest to get.

For your wife best option is a SOWP, Spouse Open Work Permit:

- same duration as your WP.
- most likely she'll get Alberta health
- she can do regular or small jobs, or not work at all, doesn't matter

Visitor visa maximum length is 6 months, should be renewed, without health insurance and application have to show enough funds and ties to home country.

Kids doesn't need student permits, you should include then in your application, some kind of permit/authorization will be issued for the kids (I don't know exactly how it works)

Your kids here will have right to free school (perhaps some fees and expenses).

About your post doc, I guess it's some kind of work so a work permit will be needed, but I don't know the details.


Causes of rejection are varied, some:
- Improper/incomplete application, forms, additional documents, fees.
- lack of ties with your home country. You have to show you'll come back after WP expires.
- previous travel history
- your WP will be limited by passport expiration date, Passport duration should be greater than expected WP, best option is to get fresh passports for all of you (if possible and don't delay your application)
- Medical issues.


About kids, before come here prepare records of inmunization, school transcripts. ..

(the CBSA officer at port of entry will ask if you need a open work permit for your wife, say yes you do. If he dosent ask that you should ask if wife could be issued open work permit otherwise it takes six months for her to get that and she will go bonkers staying at home. Canada is different than other countries and staying at home is the worst possible option)

make a strong case including financial documents and ties to home.
postdoctoral fellows are LMIA exempt so it relatively easy for them to get entry.
