Current residence - USA, Nationality - India.

Today, I have received my passport with stamped COPR. I would like to have PR initialization asap.

1. If I go by Road, do I need to apply for tourist visa to get to borders and activate COPR? What documents would I require to do so?
During/ After stamping is approved, can I visit Canada or do I need to wait for the PR Card. I will be giving address of my colleague who resides in Canada.

2. If I go by flight, do I need transit visa or tourist visa?

In any case, what would be the list of documents, I need to carry. Also will I need to get new proof of funds and photographs? Will I need to take prior appointments at the Border (if by road). Do weekends work as well?

I just need to initiate my COPR asap. And start for the next process.

Thanks for the information. But the following is for the person staying in Canada. I would like to know the information, for person staying outside Canada
My apologies.
Road is more straightforward. Present your CoPR and Passport. I assume PoF is needed due to your application strand. Not sure if photos are needed as IRCC will normally use the application photo for your PR card. When you say you are providing a colleagues address is this to receive your PR card as IRCC will not send PR card outside Canada? Do you intend for the colleague to forward the PR card to you by mail? As far as I know there is no appointment system for landing at land borders. You can find the services and hours of service at the CBSA site https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/gbi-rgf-eng.html

To board an airline to Canada you will need appropriate documents. As you hold an Indian passport you do not qualify for an eTA so I think you would need a visa but you would need to check this with the airline.

If you cannot stay in Canada you would ideally need either a PR card or a PRTD (available from Canadian overseas visa offices https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/application-forms-guides/application-permanent-resident-travel-document.html?_ga=2.216655126.1221511694.1538557546-153342943.1529999625) to re-enter Canada.

Thanks monkeyspanner for the information that you have provided.
Few more suggestions required.
I will be carrying all the documents submitted during the whole process. Moreover, I will be surely carry latest PoF and passport size photographs, as recommended. I will be provided colleagues address, where they can send me the PR card once approved/ received.

As, I have received IM-1 stamp on passport - If road or air, do I need to have transit or tourist visa, to enter Canada after the interview with IO.
OR, with IM-1 stamp, am I allowed to be at the border, validate the COPR and then return back to USA.

Can you please help me with the following.

My understanding is that:
-By road the IO can validate your PR (i.e. landing) from your CoPR and Passport.
-By air there is a requirement on the airline to ensure you have the appropriate paperwork to travel and enter Canada and that the CoPR and passport combination would not be deemed sufficient by the airline. As you have an Indian passport I am unsure what paperwork would be deemed sufficient. Hence my suggestion you contact the airline to check. (my only first hand experience is by using an eTA for this purpose, an option which is not open to you). The airline will refuse boarding if you don't have the correct document.
-If you have to leave Canada before having your PR card there would be no restriction other than having the appropriate paperwork to enter your destination country. As you are resident in USA I assume this would present no problems. Having left Canada as a PR you would need either a PR card (forwarded by your colleague) or a PRTD (permanent residents travel documant) issued by a Canadian Visa office plus passport to travel to Canada by air. I have seen you can re-enter Canada by road using the stamped CoPR and passport but you should double check this with CBSA.
